Opinions needed for a blown Evo X Turbo

HI Guys,

I have a blown stock Evo X turbo with just 2k miles on it. The exhaust fin just blew up on me. Do you guys think it is worth while to

1. try to repair it to stock condition and then resell it?
2. Sell it blown and as is?
3. Repair and upgrade it and then resell it?

Cos i already have another turbo and this is just sitting around idle....

I think Stock Evo X turbos sell between $300-$400 so if the rebuild is more than $200 it will be hard to get back the costs. It could be worth $200 or more as is to someone that just needs it as a core exchange assuming the housing is in good shape.

Like Hiboost said try to sell it as is. What ever you get is better then nothing. Rebuilding it would not be worth the money unless you plan on keeping it and returning the car to stock when you sell it.

Ok thanks! Will post some pics up soon. No idea why the turbo blew up at less than 2k miles. I was running on stock boost with just a catback exhaust.

Seems like a factory defect.
Not balanced right?
Too much shaft play?
*shrugs*

It's either a factory defect or something went through it to break it to bits.

Has the car been running ok ever since?

can't you try and get a new one under warranty if your only mod was a catback? Then you would have a new turbo to sell.

Sorry to hear about your news. I have an evo x turbo for sale off of our evo x. Used with only 5,000 miles. Perfect condition and will ship it out to you for $350.00.

Imo, I would upgrade to a blouch 2.0 unit. We have some good deals going on those right now too!

If you have any questions, shoot me a call tomorrow!

The bigger question is what caused the destruction. It does sound like you cracked a piston ring land and it went through the turbo. Turbos don't self disintegrate.

I would inspect your cylinders with a video borescope.

You should also look for a post by username junction which sounds like the same symptoms of many.

I would be very worried as to what went through the turbo to actually cause this.

Neither did the spark plug that went through it.

Nothing wrong with the spark plugs or pistons or anything. You've never seen a turbo failure before without a foreign object assisting it? Bummer.
