Heat wrap turbo? Good? Bad?

Hey is it a good idea to heat wrap my turbo? I know it makes it spool faster, but how much will it shorten the life of my turbo?

Turbine side... it does allow them to spool faster, the exhaust gast is hotter and therefore thinner and can exit out quicker. You don't have to wrap it, you can get heat coating for it from SwainTech or HPC. Not to mention a coating helps for underhood temps. win-win...

As most of you know, the exhaust temp on the X is much higher than the previous models. This is partially due to bad heat dissipation from the turbo being in the back side of the engine bay. I'm sure Mitsubishi became aware of this so they made the hood vent and heat shields with a vent that is suppose to direct air flow to the turbo.

By wrapping the turbo, heat dissipation will be worse and it'll probably lead to turbo failure. So far, I know 2 stock turbos in Japan that failed from the exhaust temps being too high (both had stock exhausts). The shop was saying it was due to high exhaust temp caused by high back pressure from the stock exhaust system. By wrapping the turbo, you'll also be increasing your exhaust temp = increasing your chances of turbo failure.

There is also the issue that by wrapping the header, the actual metal will be heated to a greater degree and things like water can lead to cracking because of larger temperature swings.
