Help, Cobb Stage 2 breaking up at high RPM

I'm running Cobb HKS 93 oct stage 2 map. My mods are just a panel filter, UICP, pulled the pill (I tried putting it back in because I was slightly overboosting, but I had the same results.) and AP.

I'm getting a lot of breakup that starts at about 5500rpm at WOT. I'm thinking plugs are possibly getting weak, but I just don't know. I'm also getting tons of black smoke during the breakup, so I don't know if it is from overfueling or misfire.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

probably going super rich and turning off the spark. Pull out the plugs and check the way they look see if it's all black.

That's what I was thinking, but I'm somewhat of a rookie when it comes to this stuff. I'll try to do that in the morning. Thanks!

Are you running a turboback exhaust as per the instructions for a stage 2 map?

Yeah, looks as if you should have read the stage II requirements a little more closely... Put the pill back in, and reflash to HKS Stage I.

A minimum of a catback + test pipe is required for a stage 2. You don't necessarily need a DP upgrade as the stock one already flows very well.

For all that don't know, Stage 2 does not require the exhaust system(per Hollywood).

I have read the instructions and am fully aware of what cobb states is required.
It has been verified by several other people and tuners that the stage 2 is safer without the exhaust and not absolutly needed.

Well, some people are obviously having problems running a stage II map on a stage I equipped car. So maybe there is something to COBB's recommendation...

Why don't you call Cobb directly? There has to be a reason they have a stage 1 versus stage 2 map right? It "might" be ok for "some" cars to run stage 2 without an exhaust, but I would guess that in general, it's safer and better to run the stage 1 map. Try stage 1 and see how it runs.

Stage 1 - Intended for an otherwise stock 2008 Mitsubishi EVO X GSR vehicle with a stock or cat-back exhaust

Stage 2 - Intended for an otherwise stock 2008 Mitsubishi EVO GSR vehicle with full turbo back exhaust system

Which part of “full turbo back” don’t you understand?

Edited.

I am very aware of what cobb claims that you need to run stage 2.

This is the type of response i was looking for.

You gave a lot of down low grunt but in the upper rpm's at higher gears the exhaust backpressure will start effecting you.
Getting a good cat back will solve the power loss and studder that you are experiencing.

mine does it with just stage 1 it doesn't have anything to do with stages or turbo-back / stock. It must just still be getting far to much fuel up top... wish I could get rid of this so I can haul ass all the way to redline!!!
