Dom 2.0 Early Impressions

Got everthing installed on the car last night then started tuning around 1130. Took some where around 20 pulls to dial the turbo and cams in with Richard at Evolution Dynamics. Took around 2.5 hours to finish. Richard was awsome explaining almost each thing he changed. I drove he tuned, which was awsome cause I could feel the improvement with each change. First thing I beleive we did was adjust MIVEC/timing setting, then adjusted AFRs to be spot on 11.5-11.6 throughout, and lastly worked on adjusting the turbo. This will be mostly a subjective review since the car was road tuned, which compared to my previous tune I think I like better right now. The car feels a lot smoother throughout under full throttle. Plus we could really get down to it one pull after another.

As for the mod review. I start with the more objective part. The turbo is at 15 psi at 3400rpm and full boost at 3800 rpm 27psi and holds basically that to Redline. I say holds it tapered down to 26.8psi. Like I said above AFRs were dead nutts 11.5-11.6. I did not see another number under WOT. The power is not OMG I can't handle this power, but it is a significant change. (Very Significant). The needle sweeps to redline so fast I hit the Rev limiter several times. The car with ASC full off will slide around. Gears 1-3 fly by much quicker and much smoother than before. Massive improvements cam be felt 6k plus as the turbo actually holds boost. The car is much smoother than it has ever been with aggressive driving. I give overall choice of parts a 7-8 out of 10. A 10 being unatainable.

Known negatives. No go under 3500rpm. Car before turbo was about 3200 IMO. I know some say in the 2k range, but I never felt like car did **** till 3200. Still not quite as much straight line speed as I would like, but definitely adequate. Stock gripes the car really needs some gearing changes. We street tuned so I do not have a dyno comparison from before and after. I know the numbers guys are going to be all disappointed. I can assure you it is significantly faster.

I'm going to drive it around now to get more impressions. I'll update. He will also email a simulated dyno run that they say runs within 10 whp of Cobbs. I know not the same.

Drove the car 250 miles last night fairly mixed driving on drive back. Averaged 23mpg with average mph of 78. It match what I got going down there. It's a blast to downshift on the highway to get buy slow moving traffic. Drove in a lot of stop and go traffic, and really did not notice that I had more lag. In fact I forgot about it. I will sayit was a solid buy. I am not fond of the idle now with the cams, but I knew I would have that issue. The more I drive the better it feels. Still happy with the purchase. I want to stress though that the car feels much quicker, but do not expect to be absolutely blown away by it. It pushes you back good in the seat, but doesn't have the whiplash effect Ive felt in some other cars. I think if you want that feeling you need to shoot for around 500+whp.

This sounds like a blast to drive. Is it your DD? Also what kind of cams did you settle on I really am leaning toward the dom 2.0 I see more people on the forums are running their turbo vs. the FPRed..not so say they don't make a quality product...but I've seen more feedback on the Dom.

I went with the Kelford stage 1 cams, and yes it is my Daily driver. I will say this combination is great for a car you drive everyday. Minimal lag solid pick up. It is how all the Evos should be shipped. Of coarse we would be paying a few grand more Im sure.

Yes we all love our EvoM.

Sounds like the turbo is a nice balance of power gained and decent spool. I'm not sure where so many people are under the impression you can get a turbo that has better top end power than stock with none of the drawbacks. Sure you can get better efficiency out of certain combinations but there is no such thing as a turbo that has 100 hp more than stock at the same boost levels with zero increased lag, it's just not going to happen.

Did you enter any before and after pulls into that Virtual Dyno spreadsheet? For road tuning that seems like a really good tool that can be used for comparing runs.

^ CBRD's BBK had near stock spool with a decent bump in power.

ATP-AU's Gold has the same thing.

its all down to compressor/housing/turbine design, and frankly mistu havn't done the best here..

Indeed I agree on that, the fact that it can't hold 20 psi past 7000 rpm is the first sign of a compromised design.

While I think it's possible to see better turbo design combos that would allow near stock spool with ~50 hp gains, reaching 100-200 hp gains isn't going to be very likely from the turbo change alone.

of course not... if it was then everyone would be jumping on it

everything is a compromise.

once you improve the design you can only make so much power before the powerband starts moving...

I do not BS, and this set up really almost feels like stock for daily driving. The only big difference is the turbo holds out till redline. Other than the noise of the turbo as far as daily driving goes it really just feels like driving the stock car around. Any one in the OKC area is welcome to come ride or drive it if they want to get a real idea how it feels. I am sure there will be some better turbos come out, but so far I am extremely happy. I need to get to a track school so I can see how it really feels.

Trying to get some from Richard @ Evodynamics. I can post up old pre cobb dyno when I get the VDR.

Yeah the VDR sheets should show some nice before and after. For daily driving even my GT30 turbo wasn't terribly slower spooling than stock when comparing part throttle response at 10 psi or less. It's only when you compared full throttle 2000 - 3500 that there was big difference for me. From 3500 - 4000 they seemed to have similar torque and above 4000 it was pulling to redline much harder than the stock turbo ever did. From what I've seen the Dom 2 is a really good balance of trading minimal spool/response for much better top end power, and most wouldn't notice the difference in daily driving part throttle situations.

To be honest I expected way more lag, but on the flip side I expected more power.
