ecuFlash noob questions

Let me start out by saying I've been reading so much it's been making my head spin. I've also gone through every X ecuflash thread I can find. I went through the beginner threads and ecuflash for dummies, etc and kept noticing a constant for the older evos. They all say to get the immobilizer code and put it in the new rom before writing the ecu. Is that something that is for the X as well? If so, can someone give me some direct info on where to pull and insert that code?

Also, I noticed people are modifying .xml's for mode 23, etc. I tried opening a rom with my .hex reader and it came out like the attached pic below. WTF? I also tried .xml editor I downloaded and notepad. Still, WTF. They all came up only crazy symbols. Can someone help me out with this?

Boostin, no need for immobilizer copying on the X.

When you want to modify xml's, it has nothing to do with your ROM file. What you do is add information to ECUFlash's xml, so that it will allow you to change the ROM from within ECUFlash. You basically open up the ECUFlash program folder, find rommetadata, look for mitsu and evo, then you edit the appropriate xmls.

Thanks, and I found how to modify the definitions. New problem now, I try to load a rom image I have saved and every time it says unknown rom. I read the openecu forums and it said to go to file>options>rom file directory and set to ecuflash\rommetdata which you can see in first pic below. Then I try to open my saved rom and I get the unknown rom image in the second pic. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times with no luck. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

What ROM are you trying to open? Is it actually a legitimate ROM?
