Louis' AMS/FP Red powered EVO X re-tune by EFI Logics 9/24/2009

I just wanted to post a quick update of my EVO’s progress as I had it re-tuned yesterday at EFI Logics in Bethel, CT. For those of you who don’t know my setup, here it is:

Stock long block & clutch
Stock FMIC, LICP, BOV
FP Red
AMS Wide Mouth downpipe
AMS test pipe
AMS single cat back exhaust
AMS UICP
AMS short ram intake
Walbro 255
Ultimate Racing fuel kit
DW 1000cc injectors
COBB AP v.2
GM 3 port BCS

About six months ago, I had the car tuned at about 25.5 psi peak boost, with minimal taper by redline thanks to the GM solenoid. On 93 octane pump gas, the car made 366whp/309tq on the Mustang Dyno. I wasn’t running much timing, and the car felt good. This was during the spring time when temperatures were cool. Summer rolled around and the car felt like the power was “in and out” on the way up to redline. I data logged pretty much all summer, and really wasn’t knocking much at all… never really even pulling a full degree of timing.

I was running Injector Dynamics 1000cc injectors at the time, and unfortunately had to zip tie the plugs together to make the setup work. ID said new connectors would be coming out, so I waited… but the new ones still never fit right. Regardless, the injectors functioned properly but the car was a BEAR to start (15 seconds of cranking when warm). I recently ordered a set of Deatchwerks 1000cc injectors to cure the warm start up trouble, and of course to also get rid of the rigged plug contraption I had going on with the Injector Dynamics setup. By the way, FWIW, Tony Palo from T1 was a stand up seller throughout the process, and is refunding me on the injectors… Anyway, yesterday I installed the DW’s, and went back to the dyno. Without even tuning the car, the car started up first crank, so we didn’t mess with the latencies. We began making some pulls and making tweaks. We also did some testing regarding the knock by removing 5 degrees everywhere in the maps. The car still had blips of slight knock even with literally no timing… so we decided to see what the car “wanted” in terms of timing. Long story short, we leaned the car out a little (10.9 up to 11.4), added 2 degrees of timing, and made a pull. Timing is still conservative, and peak boost is at 26 and change, tapering to 24 at redline. Minor horsepower was gained, but I gained 31 ft. lb.’s of torque! The car feels considerably stronger now, and pulls faster through each gear. Knock is still there, which unfortunately I’m beginning to believe is inevitable on these cars if you want to make any kind of power. The car is pulling a degree to a degree and a half worse case, so for now, I’m not going to sweat it. Not once has my learned octane rating dropped below 100.0%. An AMS FMIC, cams, and either E85 or meth is probably in store for next year if my wife lets me. Thanks for reading!

Old vs. new tune (366/309 vs. 370/341):

Thank you... that is what impressed me the most as well. The EVO X is so weird as it responds so well to timing increases, but then spits it right back at you by throwing knock values. There seems to be no real "tuning plateau" for timing in these cars... strange.

On E-85 my tuner said he could add ridiculous timing, obviously the E-85 helps a lot, but he said he never found knock on my car and eventually pulled some timing because we weren't making more power but never had knock. The X's like timing i thinks.

Good numbers btw!

Areas that I commonly see it is 6500 - 7500RPM. 15 degrees is requested, although not always granted

I'm jealous of you having access to E85. Your situation sounds like a common timing plateau, which is good news for you. You're stock turbo still, right? What is your timing at by redline?

Yup stock turbo still, I am not sure what it's at, I will check on that and get back to you.

I'm curious...what are you IAT's at that RPM level? They have to be going through the roof on that stock core. That could have an effect that knock you are encountering.

Was this directed at me or OP, I guess it could be either, at least I think seeing as the Red uses the stock core right?

He is referring to the stock FMIC. Im sure it is getting heat soaked VERY quickly. An AMS front mount will dramatically reduce intake air temps and have a positive effect on knock.

One of the reasons E85 is so great is because of its thermal cooling properties. Cooler air temps allow you to run more timing.

I didn't see the OP was on stock IC too.

I am also on stock IC but I have the E85 cooling as previously mentioned.

IC is next on my list and hopefully the OP's too.

I was referring to the OP. The IC will benefit you as well but the OP has to be seeing some pretty high IAT's with using the stock IC and just pump gas.

Eric, I learned last night that my IAT's taken from the COBB AP are actually pre-turbo... so all of this time I thought my stock core was doing just fine, it was probably on the virge of melting. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, I can't log IAT's post turbo... I'm not even sure if the EVO X has a sensor set up for this.
