installing nav sys in non nav x

Hi, newb here want to install the nav system on my car but i was wondering if i buy the mitsubishi navigation install kit, does it only work with the mitsu nav unit? what about if i want to use an aftermarket nav unit?

If i want to get the aftermark one, will i have to buy the nav face plate like metra or Scosche kit, and wiring harness, and gps antenna all separately? or can i get the mitsu nav install kit and mate it with an aftermarket system the same way with the oem nav unit?

Thank you so much in advance.

If you go HERE you can get the unit... You can find the Antenna and dash trim probably somewhere easily

The Mitsu install kit you're thinking of does not work with aftermarket navi. The Metra and Scosche kits do. There is an OEM (JDM) piece that's 4-5 times more expensive, but has infinitely better fit and looks much better. Here's where you can buy the DOUBLE-DIN kit that fits like OEM, because it is OEM:

The "wide navigation" is the MMCS, the "2 Din" is for aftermarket units.

I noticed they (xrims) just bought that navigation unit within the last 2 months for $861 shipped on eBay, including the dash trim required. They are now re-selling it without the dash trim they originally got with it. I sent a message asking why they're getting rid of it so soon, it seems kinda weird if you ask me.

xrims bought this unit first (dont know for how much), then soon after found a piece on ebay that came with the trim and not expansive, so he bought the ebay one with the dash trim, and so he has 1 extra nav unit (without trim)... at least thats what he said on the forum.

i just installed the oem navi unti and it was a piece of cake... it works great and is easy to use. probably the easiest navi system i have ever used.. only drawback is i would like a manual so i can figure out how to set some of the other features instead of farting around with it to figure them out

Correctly stated, thanks jcdeng.
I actually paid $995.00 for the unit I'm currently selling on Ebay. Hopefully I'll recuperate most of my money

So does that price tag mean this is the smaller hard drive version that comes with the '09 Ralliart?

ok, after a couple days of searching and research, I decided to go with aftermarket nav system. I got my eyes set on Pioneer AVIC-X710BT from Crutchfield, I like the fact that they give you everything you need to install it (dash kit, wiring harness, and picture instruction), although i probably have to get the sorsche kit cuz the one crutchfield provides is the metra, but thats not that big of a deal.

what i want to know is, anyone have any experience with the Pioneer AVIC-X710BT system, or buying from Crutchfield? Is their intruction simple and easy to follow? (like i don't have to solder stuff)

second, couple of my friends told me not to do the indash nav because it will end up causing your car's window get smashed, whole dash trim rip apart and unit gone. That i am better off buying one of those garmin and tomtom stick-on the window navigations, and take it with you when you leave car. Any thoughts on this??

Thank you

No this is the 30gb hard drive. I bought it used, which explains the 995 tag, it's the unit that retails around 2g.

The Mitsubishi Nav System was rated the #1 in it's competitors... I'd choose it over the Pioneer too be honest... It'll look better with your car if you ever choose to sell it also.
