I called the dealership on this issue and apparently there is a different iPod cable that they can wire up to the back of the factory headunit but it costs twice as much. I haven't really verified this because once I heard twice as much I was out on that.

Yes -- I got the factory Mitsu kit for the car. It was involved and I probably wouldn't have done if it wasn't a feebie, courtesy of Mitsu for another issue. Dealer had to order a few parts that tap into the back of the non-SSS head unit. It was a harness plus another converter box. It gets you a standard 1/8" stereo cable to plug in an external source.

Without it factory, what do you do to set it to the external playback?

You know like, AUX on an aftermarket deck.

On the base GSR stereo if you have the factory kit, you hold down the "CD/MP3" button for 2 seconds, and it switches to the AUX input.

yeah i found that AUX channel quite easily......

Did you do the job yourself? If so.....am I wrong to believe the 18 pin molex cable isn't already part of the existing harness?

According to the wiring diagram that I have, from directwire, the aux channel input left is a black and white wire pins number 13 and14 and the aux channel right are pins 4 and 14.

I believe the wire harness is already there...taped back with blue tape. The reason I believe this is because when reading through another thread on how to install navigation on non nav they mention just plugging the nav in using a existing molex cable. and according to the diagram i have the AUX and NAV use the same 18 pin molex cable........ i think after i just have to find the wires and splice into them and install the jack.

Any thoughts?

I didn't do the install myself -- the dealer did it all. And, I think you're right on the harness --- tap into the existing harness, not necessarily replace it. I don't have the part number since I didn't do it the install. The dealer had to actually install the thing twice, because the first time they used the wrong part, then had to order the part that had that converter box. Trim, glovebox, and other bits had to be removed and a hole drilled in lower storage bin to route the cable. Not too complex, I guess, but I would be bummed if I broke some overpriced trim piece and have to replace it. Good luck with the install.
