I'd be happy to pay the price for the disc, load it on to my HD, unlock it, rip it off there, and make it available for the entire world to download.
Fckin bullsh!t... Pay $2k to pay another $200... All Garmin GPS map updates are free.

The reql question is, is what I have proposed even possible? Is it possible to take one HD and simply pop it into another mmcs and still have everything work?

Sean and I will let you know soon. He has an older version of the software on his (has the DVD in motion hack). We're going to pull the app partition and copy it to my drive.

i was wrong but it's yearly... the 2008 with 2006 map should be updated no matter what for free.

How recent are the maps in the Navigation System?
The maps are updated around the 4th quarter on a yearly basis.

Wow, they did say it. I'd call it a failure on their part. Nevertheless, we'll be in like Flint soon.
What this does mean, however, is those of us who bought 2008 (and 2009) model year vehicles with 2006 maps have a good case for asking for a goodwill update.

This is my third car with NAV. A Toyota, a BMW and now a Mitsubishi. They all came with map data that was 1-2 years old. The update for the BMW was $200 and the Toyota update DVD was $250. None of them offered a free update. Mitsubishi is not doing anything unusual.

Toyota provided free updates during the entire warranty period for my Prius. Then after the 3/36 warranty expired, the "yearly" update was ~$200/US.
The DVD is easily copyable [assuming access to DL-DVD equipment]. It was 8.5GB for the 2008 update for the Toyota which fits nicely onto a double-layer DVD. I suspect the Mitsu update(s) will be on more than one DL-DVD.

Mid-summer for the update. I promise to post something up with the availability and a how-to ask for a goodwill update when it becomes available.
