Need advise: upgrade sound system

goal is to have the "thump" but not too loud that it drowns the music, and not too heavy. Any recommendation? I drive a 2008 evo X MR, unfortunately ... mine did not come with the sound system And what is the average or reasonable cost to have this done???

Do you want to upgrade the whole system or just add a sub to your OEM system?

Thank you salukidude & redhook for responding. I don't know what I wanna do yet honestly, after listening to what the sound system in another evo x (which has a 10inch in the truck)--it sounded good, but the thump on the outside is too loud that it drowned the music...

Just upgrade the whole system; head unit + speakers + amp(s) + sub. You can put a doube din head unit in the X no problem, and the newer JL and Alpine amps are small enough to fit under a front seat. I've done all of this minus the sub which will be in two weeks. I'm getting a custom fiberglass box for it.

salukidude: cool, let me know how it goes...thanks for the advice--I'm thinking of having someone install it...one who specialize in this kind of thing. How much do you think it will cost? Around $800-$1000? P.S. You liking your MR?

having a sealed box will have a nice bump on the inside and not so loud bump on the outside. Might wanna look into dyno mats, which help keep the sound in. Gotta go quality or it will sound like garbage no matter what. JL audio amp and Subs . Im biased after buying Jl Audio, Others are good too.

I had my system in my old honda, and wanted the same thing. very nice quality, a good bump, but not these gangster bumps that sound like godzilla walking around. You can hear it a little outside, but when you open the door, you definitely hear it. and no rattling, I was very happy. Paid 1700 for install with jl audio 500 watt amp, and 1 Jl audio 10w7, and a sick box.

no problem. and bottom line is go to a nice store (not bestbuy) they'll have a sound room so you can tell exactly what you want. Good luck man.

Dyno mats do wonders!!! It will aid your car from sounded like a vibrating trash can, it is defiantly something you want to look into if you're going for a really loud system, but want a clean bass at the same time... JL is the only sound products I would put in my vehicle..

Don't go to any chain business. They are like wal mart, but not as bad. they buy returned and fixed products and sell them as new. Find a hometown car audio store. They're in all cities.
