my 1993 evo 1 repaint and tweak

finally committed to repainting the car. car is soo much fun to drive I couldnt take it off the road. car was 2740lbs with 460whp at 24psi. finally upped the boost last week to 26psi. now with the car partially stripped she weighs about 2600lbs. wow is all I can say. driving her at this weight. wish it could stay this light. now addicted to making car light as possible.

car is a daily driver. I have a low tolerance for NVH (noise vibration, harmonics) so I mod my cars with a goal of keeping the car just as nice to drive as when it was first sold at dealer. this car is not hacked but intelligently lightened without later regretting a mod was made. no noisy clutches. no noisy exhaust. no rattles or vibrations. cold A/C, P/W, P/L and heat. all sound deadener in place. I do have some small inconveniences that I can live with. no self retracting seat belts. manual mirrors, no radio, and no wipers. I have been using rain-x for years and find it to work quite well for my needs. and it does rain a lot in florida.

EDIT: current finished look with more pics on page 6 post 87

ACT 2600 with old school street disc (lighter shifts great)
ECM link V3 running evo 8 MAF
greddy type S

24lbs boost. hta green 2.3

roof is in pretty bad shape. and the moment I lowered the sunroof assembly I knew it wasnt going back in. rear glass without wiper is easy to come by and cheap.. cleaner looking without. rear power ant not needed. can run stick-on windshield type when and if a radio goes back in.. rear speakers were still in car so they are coming out. going back to the original wing. I like it mostly because its much easier to see through rear veiw. but I think its cleaner looking as well. last I found some front springs from an acura that have the same spring rate as what I have now but are lighter. new paint does have weight. but will be happy if I loose 50lbs here. especially since all the weight is being removed from topside of car. will handle noticeably better. I tried wingless but didnt like the look.

reason for doing the repaint. RUST. the roof ribs on these cars were sealed with something that deteriorates and collects moisture. the rust starts from in the car. if not too bad the ribs can be cut off, sand blasted and glued back on with a modern panel epoxy. have done this with good results. but this rust was too far advanced. couldnt cut rib off near sunroof. too risky having roof itself not seal.

old color with evo 3 wing

old blue sans wing. mikey no likey.

old weight (I think spare tire and antilock was in place)

The 3 is my favorite "older" Evo.. Such a timeless design of that body!
for deciding to keep the wing on 'er too...an Evo just isn't a 100% without one of it's signature features in my opinion..

If you want to up the fun, throw some better tires on it! That'll help carry the new-found power with you through the corners!

I bought taller tires for the car about a year ago. but have been skeerd to put them on. I like the car squirly and hard to control. the taller tire will look far better, take speed bumps better and ride better. but thrill will take a big hit. and i dont want a sticky tire on the car. trans is no where near as strong as late evos. so you are better off with a tire that spins if you want the trans to last.

picked up some parts today from salvage yard. headliner, roof supports, rear glass, for the new roof. also picked up some lightweight manual mirrors. picked a cool sunglass holder that mounts in grab handle spot. (for the evo 4)
