2003 Evo IX conversion build thread.

I purchased my new to me 2003 Evolution VIII GSR in December of 2010 from Mickey, who is a fellow EVOM member on these forums. He was moving back to Hong Kong and needed to get out of his car. I met up with him and checked out the car everything seamed to be in proper condition. Compression/Leak down/ Coolant pressure test, I went over the car thoroughly. He gave me a bunch of Voltex parts and various aftermarket parts and I gave him his asking price and we both made out great! To this day Mickey and I still stay in contact. I recently showed him the progress of the car when he came back to visit.

I drove the car around for about 6-7 months till the OEM clutch started slipping around 65k miles. I ended up decided to build a IX engine with MIVEC so I picked up a IX engine and sent it out to C&D for some machine work. I then sent out my transmission to Shep, because I was either having 4th gear lock out or my 4th gear syncro was in bad shape. I didn't care to take the chance and I didn't have enough room in my garage to tear the transmission apart myself. This was really not something I wanted to do twice, so I decided to ship her out.

Here is my parts list, everything I can think of as of now.

I'm going to start with the engine first and proceed to other areas of the car as I go.

I traded my fresh engine for a 2006 IX engine.

I cleaned up the motor a little bit here and I swapped on my VIII turbo and my ARC heat shield.

I then decided to tear the motor apart after I did a compression & leak down test. Once it was painfully obvious there were some issues with my new paper weight I purchased, I took the motor into the machine shop to be thoroughly inspected. Turned out the entire motor was destroyed and I had to rebuild the head and block. Thankfully I only had to bore the block .10 over. Weisco Pistons, Eagle rods, acl bearings etc, ams balance shaft delete, etc.. The typical stuff done, nothing too special.

I got a light P&P on the head, 3 angle grind, beehive springs, titanium retainers, keepers, seats, and GSC 2 cams.

Then picked up my ETS FP HTA3582R w/ .82 ar.. I have to say ETS has been the best company I have dealt with! Period. I cannot stress how great these guys truly are! They really helped me out and cut me a killer deal

Started getting some serious work done:

Got a lot of stuff done here too, bolted up my turbo and most of my accessories after I completed my timing

Sent in my transmission to Shep for a fully built Stage II trans and picked up a twin disk competition clutch version C, which CC claims to supports up to 750 ft-lbs. Their customer service is really nice too! The clutch pedal feels like stock and you can discard the OEM TOB which is really nice and makes the install simple!

Mating simple to do after I figured out you had to walk the transmission onto the block. Dropped the motor into my car. Took me about 35 min to get her in there.

Officially got the motor cinched in here the next day. I was really tired so I called it a night with only a few motor mounts installed and supported by the cherry picker.

Test fitting some IC piping. The guy I bought this from did an awful job at welding and replacing the BOV flange to a vband. Made life pretty difficult for me. Was worth it in the end though. I hope the pipes don't blow apart. If they do, looks like I will be on the hunt for another UICP.

Grinding away what I believe to be the tow hook since it will not be need it in this location. I plan to install a diffuser and create a venturi underneath the car.

Installed a lot of the wiring harness and test fitting some more parts.

Installed the radiator, the fan shroud and fan were hitting the turbo. I tried cutting the shroud out of the way and grinding down the fan blades to clear. This worked but did not leave room for the intake. I ended up having to go with a slim fan for 40 bucks. Not a bad deal if you ask me and the install looks fairly clean.

Installed and mounted my tread stone intercooler. I believe these cores to be very good. I am rolling the dice on this. With the research I've done, I feel they're well worth the money and definitely up to the task! Only time will tell!

Picked up some Hankook Evo v12 ventus 285/30/18's for all 4 corners. I hope these tires will be good as I've heard mixed reviews. I've auto x'd on a set that were much older and much smaller so we will see. I plan to step up to a better tire next time around.

Again more test fitting IC piping and intake, installed AN fittings in my valve cover, some wiring harness clips, tbelt cover, and my synapse bov.

Wheel dude hooked it up with some Rota G-Forces 18x10 +35 in hyper black.

Pic of my 2007 GSXR 600 and my new tires on my new rims. Behind are my old Enkie 17x8.5 w/ 235 tires 80% tread if anyone is looking to pick up some rims

This is where I'm at as of now. The wires and tubing you see on the engine bay is for my new gauges I've installed. This is the official IC setup. It took me a little while, but I finally have everything in there! Just waiting on a few parts to start the car for the first time!!

So did you swap the wiring harness and ecu since you now have an evo 9 motor?

Yeah I swapped Engine wiring harness, ECU, and re-pinned the transmission sensor.

Nice build. Sucks you got beat on the motor tho, good luck fighting that! Also a half size radiator will clean it up a bit more, DNA civic radiator is inexpensive and looks great. That exhaust mani is sexy, I want it!!

That is awesome. You don't see very many people that do this.

Thanks for the support guys. Means a lot! I've been working on this thing for over a year now. I am hoping to start it this weekend!!

Partially done with my gauges. A few teaser pics of the dash:
I don't think I'm quite as happy with the Group-S gauge pod as I thought I would be. I need to figure out what people did to keep their gauges snug in there. At this point I feel I will move the gauges to the A pillar or the dash and setup my Car-Puter and a double din. I need to get the car started and all the bugs worked out before I do anything else though.

Great build man, love it!

Ive read that a couple people bend the radio support brackets behind the gauge pod to make he gauges fit snug. I did it on my bros Evo because he has 60mm gauges. I also used hot glue on the back to keep the gauges from moving. The hot glue comes off pretty clean if you ever want to remove it

That's good to know about radio support brackets. The funny thing is I have a hot glue gun I was going to use. It's already setup in my garage, but I figured I'd see what other viable options were first. I used hot glue to keep my car alarm light in my steering column gauge pod holder.

Hooked up my fuel pump, wide band O2, stereo relocation, and mounted my gauge pods. I need to re mount the far right one since it wasn't seated all the way down.

Pic of my gauges and stereo installed, in the process of test fitting my Recaros.
