Aircraft stripper, about 1 can worth and several 45 minute soaks sprayed off w/ a garden hose inbetween. Then used a sanding attachment for an electric drill and used 60(?), 120, 240, and 600(wet) grit progressively. Stripping took a day or two here and there and then sanding took about an hour.
