Dyno Graphs, courtesy of our friends at GST Motorsports
This is a great mod if:
1. You are maxing out your stock OEM airbox which is about 340-350whp on our dyno depending on mods. We have seen gains of approx 25whp at this level from changing out the stock OEM airbox with a good open element air filter. (see graph below*)
2. You want to run a bit more boost without other changes. We have seen gains of +1psi from 5,500 to 7,000rpm on a lightly modded Evo 9. (see graph below*) and approx +2 to +3 psi gains up top on more modified evos from just installing a open air filter with no other changes.
3. You like to hear your turbo working. Induction and BOV sounds are increased with this open air filter, for good or for bad depending on what you like. wink.gif You can increase your BOV sound without installing a vent to atmosphere BOV that will just make your evo run poorly.
This open element air filter does not distort the OEM MAF readings which other open filters might do. It is a direct bolt on with no funky adapters needed. Just unbolt your MAF from the stock airbox and install this filter directly to the MAF.
If your evo is ready for a open air filter or you just want one for the sound and a little more boost and power, this is a great solution!
OEM air box with aftermarket drop-in filter (Base Run) Vs. Open element air filter (Test Run)

*Test run and Base run where both optimized via a tune for respective air induction system
OEM air box with aftermarket drop-in filter (dark blue plot) Vs. Open element air filter (light blue plot)
*This was purely just changing out the OEM airbox assembly with the Open element air filter, no tuning changes whatsoever. OEM box is the leaner AFR plot, the Open air filter added +1psi boost on this Evo which increased load and thus richer AFR. Increased spool time from open air filter can and was tuned out after this.

How well does this really filter?...media looks pretty thin in pics. Lots of light coming through in the pleats. Is there some sort of gasket to seal it to the MAF or is it relying on a plastic to metal sealing?
Do you think it would fit in a Kansai Service CF air box?

the filter is made out of microfiber paper element and the media is actually really dense.
The OMG filter bolts on to the MAF assembly directly. When you disassemble the factory air filter/MAF assembly, you will need to reuse the oem gasket.

Thanks for reply!
Is it washable? Just out of curiosity, do you have a micron rating for the filter?
If any one local to Speed Element has a Kansai Service airbox, please eyeball it and see if this would fit. I would like something like this better than the HKS filter.

if your K&N air filter has the same mounting points, it should be a direct replacement. I would definitely get a re-tune to get the best results.

Holy crap!!!! You got these back! Props to Speed Element. Now I don't have to source these things...what a PITA it was trying to get one made for a reasonable cost.
I have had an oil sample taken with this filter on and the silicon content of the oil was completely normal. It filters GREAT
I may have to pick up one of these myself.
