evo 9 engine removal

I know that there are several threads about this already but for some reason when i search it only brings up 1 result (help: engine removal) which doesnt answer my question. I am going to be pulling the motor out thought the top. My question is can it be done leaving the trasfer case in the car...so i will only be removing transmission and motor? or should i pull the motor, trans, and transfer case all together?

sorry for yet another thread everyone!!

Maybe the motor and transmission will come out together with some persuasion. I don't see any way possible for the transfer case to come out with it too. It's just way to big and it extends out towards the rear of the car.

Possibly, but you would still run into clearance issue (I think) trying to pull it all out the top. Not sure if you can swing it back enough to let the transfer case clear on the way out.

I believe you would be correct here as the half shafts do go into the transfer case and not the transmission. Not that it is really that hard to pull the axles though.

You have to remove the transfer case to pull the motor with trans out from the top.

you have to pull the transfer case out in order to get the motor in trans from up top. make sure you have a couples of jacks and wood to hold the tcase or else its going to be a bi***. your looking at hours of work.

My buddy took his engine out after he found out the piston was shot.

In his driveway,on jacks. Transfer case out first(or at least moved) far enough over to clear the block.

Then he moved the transmission back and pulled the engine up through the top.

It was tough. I was lucky, I used a lift and dropped the entire subframe out.

Thanks for that thread! Someone in there pulled their motor just as I was planning do to. unbolt the transfer case and move it out of the way and then pulling the motor/tranny seems like it will come out like a breeze.

thanks everyone!

Easiest way to pull the engine/trans out is
removing the t-case and dropping the trans/engine out of the bottom

if you want to remove the engine with the t-case still connected
-remove cv shafts and drop the entire front subframe and motor/trans/t-case but this is more work than taking out the t-case then doing the above

if you are doing it in the driveway dropping the engine/trans in from the top is doable but you need some finese to get it in without crushing or breaking anything.

if it is avaliable doing the engine removale/install on a lift from the bottom will save you a TON of time/work and headache

Just did a clutch job on my IX. After unbolting the T-case and pushing way off to pass side, and removing the tranny, there was 100% enough room to take to long block out the top. It's quite simple and I seem to think people over think the process sometimes because it appears to be a complicated project. Note: I also had the IM, Exh Mani, turbo, radiator and all the small stuff off due to a complete build going on which provided a ton of extra room to wiggle.
