Turbo upgrade, goal 120 MPH pump, EF2 or HTA71?

So after attending the shootout and seeing what these small frame turbos can do, I have decided to go and upgrade a few things. My car currently sits at about 330 whp, stock turbo, 340 fp, 680's, 3.5" ETS "wide" FMIC, and tephra V7. I will do most if not all of the install of the hard parts myself, save for a new clutch which will be installed by Boostin Performance, along with a dual tune for E85 (I will go to ID1000's or FIC 1150's before said tune takes place). I will be going to an SS recirc O2 housing like Buschur or MAP's offering.

The EF2 seems very appealing and it has already proven it can hit 400 whp on pump gas. What about the HTA71? That comes in at about half the price but does require I send in a core. Seeing as this is my DD, that is not as easy as it sounds, but I can deal if I need to to save almost $1000. Lastly, I will not be upgrading cams. I may not hit my goal on pump gas on stock cams but I am sure I can get darn close and with E85 exceed it.

Thoughts? Bad ideas, good ideas? The clutch will be an ACT 2100 as recommended by Boostin. Any guidance is appreciated!

Todd

If your worried about down time. you could just buy the HTA71 out right for 650.00 plus the100.00 core charge, that way you don't have to send your evo 9 turbo, FP will just send you the HTA71 coldside/chara. swap the parts from your evo 9 turbo to the FP 71(hotside,lines,wastegate,j-pipe) and your good to go .

I appreciate the thought but if I'm not mistaken, after talking with Robert at the Shootout I don't think they're doing that kind of core exchange before. I'm guessing they were getting VIII cores or bad IX cores too often. I'll email them to find out because I have to think those two turbos are very similar outside of pricing which is rare for FP to come in as the "cheaper" option in these kinds of scenarios

You Can Port the stock turbo and mani and put cams say s2 and or kelfords with a fmic and all other mods you listed with e85 should be about 400hp

BBK full, PTE 880cc, o2 housing, kelford 272's - 125mph full weight on 93 oct. look no further

Also I would research your clutch options a little more, the ACT isnt my first choice. Or a choice at all for that matter

So many options... I wanted to go with a Competition stage 1 based on English's recommendation but BP reco'd the ACT. I still may do the Competition clutch. Between the clutch, turbo, and cams, I have about a hundred different combos and routes I could go... I'd like to try and do 400 on pump with no cams, at least to start with. E85 isn't readily available enough in my area to make it viable as a DD fuel.

AFAIK the HTA71 is a compressor wheel only upgrade, similar to our EF1 offering which explains the price difference. The EF2 includes upgraded compressor and turbine wheels

Thank you for the clarification Chris and that does make sense. I'm definitely not on a shoestring budget but I would like to be as frugal as I can be relative to my goals. Seeing results like above on those style turbos definitely gives me hope. I did hear back from FP and I misunderstood; they still offer the $100 core charge for the HTA71. I'll take a look at the EF1 as well!

I have had an ACT with lightened flywheel for 50K...no issues. I chose that at the time purely based on cost...now that I have more money, I will probably go with something a little more expensive.

So far I'm getting quoted about $660 in parts on the ACT 2100, whereas the Comp Stage 1 comes in at around $475 if memory serves. I haven't heard a bad thing about the Comp clutch, essentially it is just like stock but can hold up to around 400 ft-lbs...
