Question drive train / tire noise. Is this normal?

OK...I know I bought an EVO. We wanted it...they gave it to us so don't *****!! I do need to ask about the drive train / tire noise. Is it normal for it to be pretty loud? At normal Northern Virgina crusing speeds 5 mph to 70 mph (all within 1/4 mile at times) the noise is pretty loud. Is it just the tires?

I have loved this car since GT 1 but the noise at crusing my make me rethink it as a commuter car. Is my cars noise level normal or could there be something wrong with the tires or drive train? Its a 2003 with 4,600 miles. In case you are wondering I just bought it 2 weeks ago. I am coming from a E36 BMW M3.

thanks

Pete

I am getting a whine / truck tire super swamper type sound. Sounds like my Jeep Grand Cherokee when its in 4WD but a bit louder. No grinding sounds at all.

Ummm... if you have the stock tires they are pretty loud. VERY loud actually. the whine might occur in 1st and 2nd gear.

sounds like it might be the advans wearing. Those tires are great but they get very noisy day by day. At 4500 miles mine were really loud too and thats why I changed them. Good luck with the car.

evos are loud. Some vary as I have ridden in some that are quiet but since the day I got mine it is quite loud along with the throw out bearing but no problems with it. Drive on, if it breaks, then worry about it.

could those be 4499 hard miles? do you know the previous owner? I would drain the TC fluid and look for metal, could be an early demise of the Transfer Case. Mine went out, but got loud pretty quick, sounded like a tornado siren. Drain fluids, and check the fluid for flakes, do it BEFORE yo have the car for too long! have the dealer swap out for new tires, and drive around the block and see if the noise is still there!!!!!!!!!

Hope its not the TCase. Its most likely the tires.

Rotate the tires and see if the noise moves to the back ... otherwise, putting new tires on would be the next test - obviously, that'd be costly.

See if you can get someone to go for a ride with you that has some experience with Evo's, DSM's ... see if they can pick it off ... ?

Good luck!

The tires are very loud. When I switched back to my Advans after winter I heard a very loud howl whenever I drove my car. If I hadn't just changed tires I would have thougth my TC was going out. It takes a little time to get used to. I just changed my tires to Neovas in 245/40 17s and they are much quieter. If you want something quieter with almost equal performance to the stock tires, the Neovas are a very good option in my opinion.

Find someone with tires and rims to "trade" for about a mile, if the problem is gone, you need tires, if the noise is still there however, you might want to re-think what it is. I have had stock tires, Toyo T1-s, and now falkien aziens, and I never remember my tires being that noisey! are they over or under inflated? I had my stock tires from new to 16K miles, dont recall that loud of a noise, but I am not saying its NOT the tires, but swap out first with a friend/or the dealer for a ride down the road just to see if you still have the noise or not!
