Help! Oil filter question...I searched!
Its freakin midnight and my car is on ramps.
The filter the bastads at mitsu gave me is #MZ690072
It looks tottaly different then my MZ690116
I also searched and found that MD356000 fits. However I have been searching for the past hour in regards to #MZ690072 and found nothing really.
Anyone know,............if I can use #MZ690072?? I need help I need to work tommorow

My understanding is that the original OEM filter that came on the 03 Evos is #MD356000. Since then they have replaced it with another short and fat filter#MZ690116. The taller and skinnier filter #MZ690072 will screw in just fine and work; I've run them before for 3K miles or so, but I think #MZ690116 is the actual one listed in their computer for the Evo. I would go ahead and use #MZ690072 for the time being and go get the shorter and fatter one at a later date for peace of mind. Hope this helps and good luck.

Oooo... I wasn't expecting you to say that. I use amsoil filters for my bike and car and they are both a little bit different physically from stock, but I would think as long as it is wide enough to sit properly you would be ok. What side of town do you live on?

I stopped buying the Mitsubishi brand filter since they replaced it w/ the new model. I have read a lot of threads on this site about the new filter being really cheap. I just decided to use the Mobil brand M1-108 filter or the K&N 1008 filter. I know I can depend on these two companies for good quality and the fact that the Evo has a huge PSI rating going through the filter. I don't know what the number is but it is an insane amount of pressure. I guess I would rather be safe than sorry...

The MZ690116 is a fine filter, made by Denso, and features the correct bypass valve pressure as well as a good filter element. It also has an o-ring seal, which is sweet. Fram filters are awful - cut one open, you'll see. Nothing but crap inside. The Mobil and K&N filters are fine too. They are both made by Champion Labs, which also makes the Super Tech filters for Wal-Mart. I used the Denso Mitsubishi Filter over the Mobil1or K&N becuase it's less expensive, and my motorcycle calls for the same Mobil1 filter, which I thought was a little too weird.

The problem with the MZ690072 is that is hangs too low and could be easily damaged. My dealer also gave me the same filter by accident. I took it back. They said it was not the correct filter and replaced it with the MZ690116.

Just because a filter cross references to another vehicle means nothing. The M1-108, for instance, cross references to my 03 Honda Superhawk - which has two clylinders, two carbs, and about a quart less oil than the evo. The M1-108 also fits the evo, and people use it all the time for many other vehicles with no problems.
Filters are about bypass valve pressure, volume capibility, canister burst pressure, and filter media. Small differences in the size of the outer canister mean nothing. Mitsubishi just swapped a part number - so what if it's a slightly different size, or also fits another engine? The original part number has been discontinued - the dealers may have a few kicking around on the shelves. Go ahead and use the "new" filter and don't worry about it. MZ690116 is the updated part number. I had to pull one out and look at it.
