Evolution Evolved- English Racing presents the USDM Auto Evo
Pre-release Information-
Why?
Easy, why not?
After an idea that started in June of 2008 between myself and Billy here at EnglishRacing we are proud to announce the first USDM non GTA Evo to have an auto transmission swap. Andrew (EvoRS06) and I have spent the last 8 months doing intensive R&D to make this a reality fighting hardware and software the whole way. While this has been our baby, like most projects here at ER, it was a team effort to get it to the point where it is now. A running, driving, 380whp automatic Evo IX.
The past 3+ years on this project coupled with the development of our DSM auto package have shown that the automatic is strong, consistent, and in a high powered turbo AWD, Winning. The obvious application is drag racing but for those that cannot drive a manual for whatever reason, this will eventually allow them to drive a converted Evo if they so choose.
The testbed for this phase of development was one of Andrew’s Evolutions, his daily driven IX RS. It is also the mule that we used to devise ALS on the stock computer. Being a fairly mild mannered car it features a stock motor still, GSC S2s, stock intake manifold, SD tune, FIC 1650s, an O2 dump and cutout, and a 64mm FP Red to help it breathe.
While we hadnt previously done any dyno testing with the Red on gasoline, the car had already made 520whp on E85 at 30psi of boost. A typical result for this combo on our dyno is between 430 and 440whp on 92 octane. With our automatic experience in hand from our DSM auto projects we headed to the dyno Wednesday night expecting to be just under 400whp. SD tunes are something we have specialised in for awhile so the tune went quick and resulted in 380/309 on a 28psi spike dropping to 23-24 out the top. This is around a 13% loss which is consistent with what we have observed in the DSMs (11-12%) and Kiggly has verified as well in his experience.
While I wish I could say we are ready to offer this as a conversion service to the public, we are still in our testing of both the hybrid transmission in the car and the electronics we are using to control it. It will be an ongoing project through the winter as we try some different things to make it practical as a transmission alternative, more torture testing (both power and heat), converter testing, and then some additional modifications that ultimately will help to lower the cost and improve the product.
Here are some pix of the alpha version as it is today-
The next few incarnations will refine the package, push the limits of what its capable of, and offer a strong solution for those that need to win. Sequential shifting, converter options from street only to race only, and proven track performance are all goals. As the NW enters winter and the race season ends, we now have some hard work and relatively little time to see what we can make this do before the track reopens next spring. Hopefully it works as well as our DSM transmission program but of course only time will tell.
We are not ready to sell these so please do not call the shop asking questions hoping that we are gonna spill the beans before its done. This was meant as a teaser to show whats possible and what is on the horizon. We hope to have some video up shortly showing it in action both daily driving and being beat on.
Andrew and I wanted to make sure to thank the following-
Luke, for providing motivation to make this happen and the shop space to do it
Chris, for help with installation
Jeff, Jake, TJ, and Myles for listening to us rant about this for the last few years
Billy, for asking why cant it be done and why isnt it done yet
Mark, for your knowledge and letting us bounce ideas off you
Andrew’s wife Krys, for letting him disappear as needed
Everyone that has let me talk about it and then answer questions I asked without asking: why?
Enjoy and thanks for reading,
