I have a loud new ticking noise coming from the exhaust side of my head which I'm thinking is a lifter. I have 272/272 cams in the car and they have been there for a while, but when I was driving my car hard a couple days ago, it backfired and shot a cloud of smoke out.
I've now noticed that I have this unusual noise in the head which I'm almost 100% certain to be the infamous lifter ticket that the Evo's can get.
If the lifter is stuck - what would I expect to see? would this cause breaking up under partial boost?
...I ask because I have another thread going on a similar but separate topic. Please see: help please! car is breaking up.
If lifter is stuck open, you will have zero compression. Do a compression test.
Most of the time lifters collapse, which in turn causes the valve to not open at all or open only partially. So a compression test will not show the root cause. Take your valve cover off and examine all the lifters. Check for play in the rockers and make sure all the lifters are operating correctly.
Collapsed lifters tend to cause some knock, along with a significant loss (very noticeable) in power.
