Pull and push back and forth on the shaft. If it moves its starting to go bad. More it moves the worse off you are.

Hold on there buddies. There is an acceptable tolerance for shaft play, and it's not zero. But I don't know the specific tolerance.

Evo 8/9 turbo's will have a little play, it wont' be stiff. Now if it's drastic play then you have a problem. Get a second opinion at a shop, preferably a machine shop.

where in ny are you? i can check it for you. i have the book at my house and the above poster is correct there is always a tolerance. it isnt at zero if it were it would be on ballbearings... but mhi turbo's are mostly on bushings and all of evo as far as i kno at least 8/9 are on bushings wich will have shaft play.

further more for a few bucks if it really is that bad you can buy the rebuild parts from forced performance.

if you cant have me check it, and you need to get your car going and your in a jam. heres what you do, take the compressor cover off, verify that the compressor wheel has not made contact with the compressor housing. LOOK CAREFULLY AND CLOSELY it will looked machined if there was any contact. IF THERE IS NO CONTACT YOU CAN PUT IT ON YOUR CAR AND START IT UP, if it smokes ITS DONE. if it doesnt smoke your probably fine.

those go in my area for about 750. 400something is a great price. good luck and my number is on my sig let me know if you need my help.
