Just bought a 2005 EVO 8 turbo AND a 2006 EVO 9 turbo.. Can't decide which one to use
..on my 2003.
Mods:
Boost gauge
K&N stock drop in filter
AMS turboback with hi-flow cat
Hallman manual boost controller (not installed yet)
TURBO?????????????
Walbro FP (not installed yet)
Edge o2 housing (not installed yet)
After all above mods are completed I will have car dyno-tuned at AMS on 93 octane.
What (if any) HP/TORQUE gain will I get from the 9 turbo over the 2005 8 turbo (which has the 10.5 hotside) over the stock 2003 turbo????
These are the only mods I will make and the car is a good weather DD.

as you don't have mivec, having a larger hotside may help you with power output but potentially but hurt spool/response but only slightly...it's an oem turbo that is just fractionally larger than the 8's hotside, they should be within a few hundred rpm spool of one another. On paper the 8 turbo should spool faster than the 9 but have less power potential

This topic has been covered several times. You will make more power with the Evo 9 turbo (up to ~420whp, depending on the dyno and supporting mods) than the Evo 8 turbos. The Evo 9 turbo will require an installation kit and will spool a little later. The Evo 8 turbos will get you into the mid to high 300s with the '05 turbo having slightly better top end due to the larger turbine housing; the '05 will also spool a little later for the same reason.
Obviously, your results will depend on the supporting mods, fuel, and tune.
And you can check out this thread for relevant 1/4 mile numbers with the stock turbo:

I would go with the 9 turbo if your trying to make more power of the two. The 9 turbo definitely has more potential just like he said ^

You guys are making this choice a no brainer!!! lol
I'm not too happy about the lag the car has even on the stock turbo (I'm used to buick 3.8 turbo motors) but I don't think the 9 turbo will have any more noticeable lag.... My buddy has a 35r and it's a joke for daily driving... IT HITS HARD WHEN IT HITS, though...
My goal is around 325 awhp and a 12.5@109 with a non-violent launch...

if your goal is only up to 350hp, stock turbo 8 should do the trick with better spool. but for all of us here always wanting more, we would pick the 9 just because it has more potential.

Tom,
You can make the power with the stock evo 8 turbo and the 05 turbo but the 9 would make it easier, my 8 turbo made 380 whp. but I also had a few more mods than you did.
I think your going to need a bit more than what you have but I feel you are super close.
Again,
I would add a buschur racing ported intake manifold and a intercooler and lower intercooler pipe to the mix and with the AMS tune and boost controller I think you would make some pretty good power especially knowing your goals.
I would just keep your 05 turbo instead of buying the 9 but if you already bought the 9, just sell the 05. did that make sense......

Tom,
Here is something else that might help your DD power quest:
Buschur ported exhaust manifold, just received.

Yeah, maybe im an Idiot Tom, the more I am thinking about it
I think with the upgraded turbo / flash / walboro / 02 you should be in great contention for getting that goal.....
I would still like to see you get your intake manifold done.... I think along with the boost controller and flash your call will continue to hold power in the higher rpms.
