Bad transfercase or just the cold weather?
My transfer case has been a little whiney lately. Most noticable in 2nd gear but still barely there in 3rd and 4th. I'm not saying it's loud, its just a slight whine sound. It goes away completely after I drive down the highway to work. Days here are in the 40's. Is this normal or am I about to spend a lot of money?

All of this talk about transfer cases are scaring the piss out of me.
I think I was browsing around and a new TC from Mitsu is like 2-3 grand. -_-

When is the last time you changed the tc and diff fluid? Also what fluid are you using?

Changed it a little less than 10k miles ago, really havent raced it at all. Made 3 passes at the dragstrip and that was it between the time it was changed and now. Using amsoil in the trans and diaqueen in the t-case

Change the TC fluid and if it comes out nice and clear your ok, if you notice metal particles about the sizes of sand particles, and also if it comes out dark loking abnormal then be alarmed if not then you should be in good shape, these indications help you determine how well you TC center diff or ring & gear are behaving

It might just be the cold weather. It probably goes away because it warms up from driving. As long as it does not get louder with increasing speed, I dont think you have to worry about it too much.

it gets louder in 2nd gear as the rpm goes up. Then it quites down when I shift to 3rd gear and really doesnt get much louder and 4th gear is the same as 3rd. 5th the noise is gone. 2nd gear is always louder than 3rd and 4th. I've taken the car up to 80 on the highway and just cruised and I dont hear anything at all. Then when I pull off the highway after 20 minutes of driving I dont hear anything in 2nd-4th. If it was my t case wouldnt it just keep getting louder regardless of the gear I'm in? Is it normal to get transmission whine when its cold then?

^^^
The Evo is know for making loud noizes, have you ever heard it fart ????
The TC in all evos will make winny noises in 1st and 2nd and in some case could be the tranny and i think is because those first 2 gears on on the straight cut gear side "i might be wrong" once shifted into 3rd all way up it quiets down, also the ring and gear assembly are lound at those low speeds.

For what it's worth, it was suggested to me to change the T-Case fluid as often as your oil. As you stated, it's not cheap and it's a good preventative measure.

are sure its not the tranny whining...cause they do that...mine is loud when im decel...and being in a certain gear will not effect the T-case wine...i bet its just cold fluid in the Transmission.
