I had this exact thing happen on a 924 porsche turbo, I know, rat car of the Porsche world. Friends car, but the cat didn't rattle. The honey comb material inside still got plugged. What I did was use the test port ahead of the cat as a port to measure pressure with a gauge. Set that up on there, start the car, rev it up to 4k, no load. I got 8 pounds pressure, and that was enough to make me check into that further. Put a test pipe in, problem solved. I guess you could drive the car and I'm sure when under load you'd get a much higher # then if the cat is plugged.

If you didn't gap them right that would make it drive like that at WOT. I wouldn't gap higher then .24. My little brother tried to gap his at .26 and at WOT, It wouldn't run right. But driving normal there was no problem. Hope this maybe helps Good luck

Check your IC pipes and couplings for a boost leak. I had the same thing happen to me. I bought T-clamps and never happened again.

Another vote here for clogged cat. Sounds like the exact same symptoms ive seen a few times related to clogged cat. It might not even rattle.
