causes for coilpack to fail??? Or better yet, why is my engine bay soo hot?
To all of the mechanically inclined:
O.k. so I have noticed that my engine bay "seems" (not actually sure) but it seems like its been running hotter than normal. When I pop the hood, I just feel like its hotter than normal, but I have no data to back this up... Now I recently had a coilpack go out on me, and read that heat could cause the coilpack to fail... So Im thinking that there is indeed, some extra heat being built up... Im not mechanically inclined enough to even guess where to start looking.
Now my question is what could be causing this??? It could it just be my imagination, but I dont think so...
Mods in sig, and this isnt even after driving hard, this is after normal every day driving...
And I have lowered boost to 23 psi, thinking that maybe my boost level (24.5 psi) is causing excess heat...
TIA

Did you just recently coat the downpipe? From my experience coating the downpipe will trap heat in, but the heat needs to leave somewhere (manifold, exhaust hangers, etc - nearest surface area that is not coated)
Let us know what you find out.
thanks,
Michael

Thats the only peice coated...
Im trying to get her in to be looked at, but the shop is responding w/ I dont have mechanics to volunteer to work sats. first time I have heard that 1...
Looks like I will have to find another shop...
I'll post up my findings, when I can...

You know one of the weirdest things is the shop I normally take my car to, to get work done said that about my car as well...they said it seemed be to hotter then normal

The thing that worries me is that you say your not mechanically inclined at all, but in your signature it says self tuned. Explain?

But as far as the temp goes, check your guage. Is it higher than normal?

could be any number of things. Without knowing more info I would check coolant level, coolant temps, oil temps. What weight oil you using? have you recently changed oil weights to something thinner? Check your tune. advanced igntion timing can cause hotter cyl temps-- hotter engine/coolant temps. Check to make sure all your fans are operating. Idk, these are just things Im throwing out without knowing much about your car.

Well since you guys are talking about heat being trapped, how about the cover over the coils? Wont that plastic piece trap in heat? Shouldn't we just remove it to allow heat to dissipate?
Do you have a wideband to check your a/f ratios. If for some reason an injector is not supplying enought fuel and you go too lean or run too rich that might make things warmer.
What you can do to help a little is bypass the coolant through the throttle body.

From what I hear on this forum, the factory coolant gauge sucks though. It doesnt really tell you any temps. And how sensitive is the needle to degree changes? From what I hear on this forum, not very much.

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate any insight/guess's. I know this is shooting in the dark, but just looking for ideas / possibilities...
You spend enough time in the EcuFlash forum, you learn a few things...
Im not completely helpless around my engine bay, but as far as "troubleshooting" issues, and major installs, I would say Im not mechanically inclined.
I dont have the stock guages. I do have boost, afr, and Oil tem. Oil temp never goes above normal. I dont have a coolant temp guage, but I can log it. I logged maf air temp scaled the other day, and started @ 97* and in the middle of the pull, dipped to 89*,then back up to 91*... I'll get a few logs tomorrow morning...
The car has fresh plugs, coolant level is fine, oil level is perfect, oil used is mobile1 synthetic 10w/30. AFR is 13 - 12 during spool, 11.5 ish @ peak, tapering to 11.0 @ redline.
One thing I can think of, is I just gave it more timing in the cruise area of the map from 2500 - 4000, 0 - 40 load, from 40* to 44* BUT I noticed this issue before I made the change... Is this something you can only do if running a test pipe? Like the open loop mod? Possibly building up too much heat in the 100 cell HFC? just a guess. I have my Load Required for CEL on Knock set to register @ 40% load, and havent had more than 1 flash of the cell while cruising. (slow cell set @ 3)

Could maybe be due to the "open loop mod" or your advanced timing? Not sure but maybe something to look into.

Im not using the open loop mod, due to my cat... I dont think my timing is too advanced. 44* from 2500 - 4000 / 10 - 40 load, and tapering. I can post the map, if any1 thinks thats too much...
So while cruising:
coolant temp scaled = 181*
coolant temp = 192*
maf air temp = 107 - 111*
air temp = 102 - 106*
egr temp = 265 - 271*
WOT:
coolant temp scaled = 185*
coolant temp = 195*
maf air temp = 107*
air temp = 102*
egr temp = 260*
Im not sure if this exceeds the "norm" temps.
