Mandrel Bend vs Press Bend?

so i'm probably getting a new exhaust and i'm going to be using the buschur bullet muffler so i need a midpipe of some sort.

i know press benders crimp the exhaust at the bend but how much difference does it really make? how small of a diameter does the piping get crimped down to (if it's 3'' piping)? how much would it hurt the car performance-wise?

thanks in advance

Air flows like water (it swirls around the outside diameter) like when you drain the bath tub it rotates around the perimeter of the drain. When you use anything but mandrel bent tubing it will hurt the flow and build pressure. Try to use weld els, www.burnsstainless.com

I agree, if it isn't a smooth flow, the 3inch diameter won't really make a difference.

Hurts flow and sound quality quite a bit. I'd take a mandrel 2.5" over a press 3".

question about the burns piping...how will i exactly know how long of piping will i need and what degree bends? i don't want to buy piping to find out that it's not long enough or not angled enough, etc...

has anybody made an exhaust out of burns and remember exactly what they bought for it?

also, burns uses OD. so would a 3 1/4'' OD equate to 3" ID?

thanks

Smooth mandrel bends are somewhat more important than size up to a point. Mandrel 2.5" should be a better exhaust than a crush bent 3" pipe. Do it right the first time.

most exhaust are already based on OD. So get about a .063 to an .089 wall thickness.

As for what to get... I do not know... I would think about 10 to 15ft of straight and 2-45* bends should about do it....

I personally use these guys:

10-15 ft of straight??????

not sure if i clarified it but i already have a dp and tp...i just need the midpipe to mount to a buschur bullet muffler

think 5ft will be enough in that case?

thanks for the advice

If wall thickness is .125, then yes. But that would be awfully thick.

Yeah my bad... I was thinkinking full exhaust......

That kit I posted originally would be more than enough for what you are talking about making and the price is pretty good too....

thanks again for the help...i'm not too keen on buying way more than i need but i used the same website you gave me and found these (same website but they throw their stuff up on ebay too)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3-00-...d=p3911.c0.m14

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3-00-...Q5fAccessories

so would 2 45 degree bends and 5ft of straight do the job? take into consideration it's mated to a bullet muffler too

thanks for all the help guys

Just take your midpipe off and measure it. That way you can find the length and what bends you need. And you will have just enough material.
