From what I've been reading that it is not a big gain...maybe ~20whp on a stock or red turbo.

To me that is not a big enough gain for the money being spent. I'll be upgrading to a PTE 5857 turbo and running it on a stock motor. The turbo will have plenty of power that the stock motor can handle.
Really depends on the turbo. We did a stock cam 3582HTA that made 430whp on stock cams at 26psi. By comparison I have had cars with S2s make high 400s (they were both SD) at the same boost level with the same turbo. On a Red the cams are worth 40-50whp. On the stock turbo they are typically worth about 30whp.

if you can find a decent deal on a set of used cames in the 300 to 400 dollar ranger then that is a big enough gain for the money. If I could get 20whp for every 400 i spent on my car, I would be at 600whp by now.

John bradley what sort of lag would we see in your opinion going from some S2 to kelford 280.
this is an a TS40r with 2.3,
I have the Kelfords and i am wondering if it worth it, as the car is now it not laggy at all with this turbo, and would rather not scarifice any more bottom end.

but if it only 100-150rpm then it worth it as the Kelfords 280's will make big top end.

You will lose a bit but not that noticeable. With the MIVEC you can get a good map that optimizes the cam's lowend

Aaron may have a different opionion on this topic but if you are going S2s to Kelford 280s you will lose a couple hundred but the kelfords still tend to produce good midrange surprisingly. You will feel the car come to life with that 280 and especially 7.5k+ over the S2. I say go big or go home! Look at your powerband! If you race someone your not going to be really worried about lowend. No one races someone from 3k... IMO the larger cam would be good for you. You also need to compare the lift between the two cams. I don't know the Kelford 280s lift off the top of my head but the 280 duration is basically moving the powerband to the right compared to the S2s. Let me know what you decide to due! This would be a good before and after dyno

Cams for me only smoothed out the curve for me. I didn't gain any peak at all. Gained 5-10 in a few spots, but not worth 1000+
