Buzzing/grinding noise on deceleration? PLEASE HELP?!

does anyone else hear this buzzing/grinding noise upon deceleration (while staying in the same gear).

I hear it after i take my foot off the gas pedal...and im not sure if its a problem, or if its something the EVO just does.

Someone with tech experience please advise.

Yep, happens in gears 3-5. The excuse from Mitsubishi is that those gears are cut differently than gears 1 and 2.

Then again, some people have had to replace their whole tranny. or their throwout bearing.

Search for the "Transmission failure" thread in engine turbo and drive train. It's 22 pages of decel noise goodness. In short, m,itsu says it's normal but it would still be a good idea to take it back to the dealer and have them log it with techline so you have it documented if they come up with a fix. Also call 1-888-mitsu2003, choose the option for "assitance with your vehicle" then ask to open a case with the "vehicles" department about the decel noise.

Some folks have had it since new, for others it shows up after 500 or 1000 or 5000 miles or so. SOme folks don't seem to have it at all.

I'm confused, your tag says you have a Galant. Do you mean you have an EVO with 2300 miles and no noise, or are you referring to your Galant?

I heard that noise on decel from the moment i drove off the lot. i took it back at 1500 miles and they told me that the gears are non helical cut (more strait cut) so i'll take thier word for now. BPU's only. just in case something should happen.

Drives: my evo VIII what else is there?

I heard the noise too. It seems like it was brake pads. I could feel it in the pedal not the shift lever. It is a very audible scratchy grate like noise.
FYI There are extensive pics posted of the entire gear train. I believe they under one of the threads for replacing the clutch set.

The noise he is refering to is not the brembos, notice that he never mentioned stepping on the brakes. It's the all too common decel noise.

Drives: 100 MPH in the city...

Yeah, I have that noise, too...actually, it sounds like a resonance in the exhaust, not gear noise, but I could be wrong. My Evo runs fine!

My evo makes the same grinding noise on decel. and incidently in every gear. It became evident after about 50 miles. My car has 1700 now with really no change in the noise. I've tried to refasten some of the plastic belly shields but to no avail. The exhaust is definitely not rubbing anywhere either. I notice that the noise disappears immediately upon clutch disengagement (maybe a throw-out bearing?). I went down to Mitsu to complain as I think all of us should to document this. His response? "Oh, you should hear the gearboxes in the Eclipses. I can hear what your talking about, but its normal".

I guess what puzzles me most isn’t that the driveline might make some noises a less complex example doesn't, and that this might be perfectly normal, it's that some people apparently DO NOT have the noise at all. Given the level of the sound in my car anyway (present since I drove it off the lot with 4 miles on the odo), it’s hard to imagine how BOTH could be “normal” in the same design. I'd love to hear one of these noiseless cars for myself.

I don't buy mitsu's explanation for the following reasons:

1.) I have it in all gears
2.) one of the other Ga. guys did not have it at all until 5,000 miles
3.) some folks still don't have it
4.) Honda S2000 tsb 057a describes the exact same thing and they solved it by redesigning the clutch disk.

So, yeah D, I agree that this is very puzzeling. All I can say to the folks that don't have it is Your Lucky, so count your blessings.
I agree that everyone that has the problem needs to have it documented. I know it did not show up in my car till after the first week and when it did I went straigh to the dealer cause it sounded like something was about to break (after I checked all the heat shields and misc bits and pieces cause that was what it sounded like, a loose heat shield).
