I wonder if it happens because the heat is causing something of yours to expand (while hot) maybe mine was already stretched to the limit, hence why mine was constant and yours isn't.
Previously I owned a 06 MR SE, bought brand new. When I sold it, it was about 2 years old and had about 42K on it. Never heard the noise one time. I don't know how some cars have it and some don't. Kind of weird.

My 1st '06 MR didn't make the noise either, but my current '06 MR does intermittently, so I'm just as confused about it as you are.

I beggining to wonder if the time frames of production on our cars matter. For example, b\c I've only noticed it on the IXs so far I think: I'm wondering if say all the IXs made from Sept 05- Aug 06, maybe there was a machine that made those crankshaft blades, that was out of calibration between those time frames. I don't know, something crazy to think about I suppose. My first MR was manufactured in Aug 06. It was an MR SE; last new ones made.
GG06MR, I see you traveled the Honda world extensively before crossing over. I was much of the same way. How did you like the Type-R? why don't you have it anymore? Very prestigeous car IMO. Would like to own one someday. PM Me more info on it, if you don't mind.

I think you might be right. IF this issue ever becomes a real problem, I hope that Mitsu fixes my car before that happens.
And....I'll PM you about the ITR later today!

Holy crap, 300+ posts and 2 years later there still isn't definate fix? Mine started ticking/clacking/whatever a couple months ago around 14k miles. I now have 18k and its loud and irritating.
I say we force Mitsu to do a recall! I was a victim of their bastard DSM T-case recall.. which was just AWESOME having it lock up on the highway... dicks..
Anyways go here
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm
File a complaint. Mention that there is wear and tear on Idler pulley and PS belt just for added effect like your afraid it will break. Also mention if you have replaced any parts trying to fix the problem.
So in short, this thread needs to be a sticky!! Lastly, File a complaint or this WILL NOT get fixed by ol lazy mitsu. Seriously guys, lets get this fixed.

Just posted this in my complaint.....
I 1st started hearing a metal scraping noise coming from the drive belt area around 20,000 miles on the odometer of my 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR. After researching this online, I found this to be a common/frequent problem reported by many other owners of the same car throughout the web. In fact, I even found a youtube clip of the exact same noise created for the exact same issue. The noise has been determined to be involving the timing belt rubbing against the crankshaft blade. I've only found it to only be audible at idle, so it makes sense that it's some sort of timing belt tension issue. Some dealerships are resolving this issue by replacing the timing belt, crankshaft blade, timing belt tensioner, and sometimes even the idler pulley. My local dealership denied my warranty repair claim to get the metal scraping noise issue fixed, and charged me $140 to spray engine degreaser on undressed accessory belts, claiming that the accessory belts were overdressed and that is what caused the noise. Unfortunately, my car is still making the same noise, which I am certain is being caused by the same timing belt/crankshaft blade issue. My only concern is that the timing belt will at some point in the future fail due to the obvious rubbing/contact that is occurring with the crankshaft blade, so I would like to get this fixed before that happens. Glendale Mitsubishi in Glendale, CA is aware of the problem, and acknowledged that it's a common issue, but was not willing to discuss it with my local dealership, stating that my local dealership should contact the Mitsubishi Tech Line instead. I believe this to be a very common problem with the 2006 Lancer Evolutions, and firmly believe that Mitsubishi should be responsible for issuing a Service Bulletin to get this resolved.

just posted my complaint:
I first noticed that my 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS started to make a grinding/scrapping noise that seemed to be generating from the timing belt area. The car had approximately 18,000 miles on the odometer. it seemed to be a noise that was present at idle and upon cold start ups. I started to research this on various forums and internet, only to find that it was a common problem with a clear solution. There have been a few dealerships who have seemed to have resolved this issue but each fix seemed to vary within the timing belt area. The timing belt, sensor blade, tensioner, tensioner pulleys, etc. have been known to cause this issue. I drove my car 3.5 hrs to an outstanding Mitsubishi dealership which could not diagnois my problem. it appears that the drive made whatever it was go away for the moment. this scares me! This car is my daily driver and about 90% of the times my kids are in this car with me. It would be terrible if my engine braks down on me while driving around with my kids in the car. This can be a dangerous problem. I urge Mitsubishi to strongly consider a recall for this. With such an amazing car i would hope Mitsubishi would standby it and do the right thing!

Exactly. If my motor is going to be toasted, it needs to be my fault and not Mitsubishi's.

Jesus, I live in florida, I'm traveling a.t.m and am up north... finally got my first "true" cold start.... that sound is ****ing crazy silly when the car is real cold. I'll be stopping for a couple weeks up north in WV, theres a dealership that I trust there, I'll let you guys know how they address this problem. Its now not acceptable at ALL.

You know that Mitsu isn't going to warranty replace a longblock if the timing belt snaps on a car with just about any performance mods.

but they have to prove that the mod caused it! let say you showup with an exhaust on the car. how can they really blame the exhaust for the timing belt snapping. the only thing i can see them putting the blame on would be cams and maybe a bigger turbo.
