I have the same cluck when I'm shifting at high rpm from 1-2 on my IX mr. My old 05 never did this. Come to think of it I never heard a beep from the drivetrain from my 05.

I didn't say fast, I said quick. I don't waste time if you will, granny-shifting or whatever, that's just how I drive. I'm not pounding through the gears as if racing 24/7. Actually now that I think about it I don't think I get the "clunk" when I really am pounding on it. Strange. Anyway I was just curious if this could happen at low rpm as well, since no one else mentioned it. Thank you for clearing that up.

The "clunk" is your cars way of telling you "OUCH - KNOCK IT OFF!" Learn how engage and release your clutch and you won't get the noise. Stop beating the tar out of it.

+1 No one ever said they were "beating the tar out of it." Actually I said specifically that this doesn't happen when I beat on it. If you want to baby your car down the quarter then good for you, no one else cares. This isn't the place to put your opinion on other people's driving habits.

Don't make such assumptions, there's more to it. it's not necessarily abusive, it's just a result of quick engagement. The Evo does it, my STi did it and I consider myself to be quite smooth as many people have commented on this at track events. I will engage the clutch quickly, I don't slip it forever nor do I sidestep the pedal.
It's an issue with the drivetrain system, the way the rear diff is supported by a cross member (both the STi and Evo are nearly identical in this respect) the ultra soft bushings are not enough.
Would it be wrong for someone to replace an engine mount bushing? Or suspension bushings? No, of course not, so why is this bushing any different?

Thanks for clearing up what high tq guys deal with. I always thought the 360 tq numbers on my 2003 constituted "higher tq". A question was asked and I pointed out why you get a loud "clunk". I can't do anything about you feeling stupid.

Funny, I thought this was exactly where you would put an opinion on possible sources for mysterious noises and other problems. I know there are plenty of faster Evo's, but I ran plenty of low 12's at 110 mph in the 1/4 mile and never heard a "clunk" noise. The only time I ever heard a noise like the one you described was when I beat on the car.
