TurboSmart Dual Port BOV, Hallman Pro MBC (@ 21 psi), TT flash

Miles:8001

Conditions: spun rod bearing

Pics: eh

Race/Track History: about 25 trackdays and 200 or so strip launches

Contributing Factors: 25 trackdays + 200 strip launches + idoit driver (It was like the Monte Carlo rally everytime I drove that thing) + Eh? = dead evo
It really was just unburnt fuel mixing with the oil that caused the the spun bearing, a little too rich I guess.

Drives: 03 Evo VIII bought new, orignal owner

Model year: '03
Mods: Exhaust, cams, cam gears, tme 6.5 turbo, manual boost controller, xede/xflash, ams ic with licp, ngk copper plugs (note: not tuned by Vishnu for these mods). Full explanation to come...
Miles: 35,000
Conditions: cool night at the dragstrip
Pics: coming
Race/Track History: coming
Contributing Factors: overconfidence that my motor wouldn't break. Spark plug ceramic around the electrode broke off and cracked #3 piston. No signs of heat or detonation anywhere. Crank and rods in perfect condition. Probably happened because I had installed a boost controller the night before and turned it up at the track a little beyond what the car was tested for. Also, I wasn't using the ideal NGKbr8 plug. I'll post up more later. Late for work now.

This thread is very very informative, but freaking me out. I always heard how stout the 4g motor is etc etc. How come many are blowing up when being modded and in some cases stock?

Sometimes sh^t just happens. Sometimes It's mechanical failure and is not attributed to driver error. I think this is only the case with very few evo's. Most that blow are either heavily modded and/or drove to the limits. Every car is different, I think most evo's can handle the power and abuse if they're maintained but some just aren't strong enough and can't take the abuse. Survival of the fittest!

I'd be willing to bet a majority of these are going to be rod/rodbolt failures.

You need to watch how you use the word "many"... if there are 100 blown motors on this board, I wouldn't consider that a lot considering how many Evos have been sold.

It's just that people ALWAYS post and ***** when bad things happen, but when things are going good, no one says anything. News/politics/life, it's all the same way...

I dont think so what I am wanting to find out if the common perception that 05s have some sort of bearing issue is true or false. Hopefully we might get enough data to see that a small percentage of all MY evos fail and that it is not more common in a particular MY.

They shouldnt. They are willingly part of the community here why would they greedily withhold info that could help another enthusiast evo owner out? What does it hurt to share?
