More CBRD BBK XL tweaking

Had the "test" Evo 9 with the "beta" CBRD BBK XL in again to do some more tweaking.

The car ran out of fuel last time so the owner added a BlaqOps progressive double pumper and went from FIC 1250cc injectors to FIC 1550cc injectors.

I also upgraded the OEM ECU to Tephra V7, from Tephra V5.

The added resolution in the V7 ROM coupled with 1 psi more overall netted some great gains from last time. Over 30whp gains in the midrange!

2006 Evo GSR

Modifications:

GST 2.3L stroker
Oversized valves in head (no head porting)
3" Downpipe
3" Agency Power catback
RRE rally cat (resonated test pipe)
Titek V2 tubular 02 housing
Ported stock exhaust manifold
CBRD BBK Full XL Beta (ported)
GST open cone air filter
Perrin FMIC
AMS LICP
Synapse BOV
Cosworth M2 mivec cams
FIC "BlueMax" 1550cc injectors
AEM fuel Rail
AMS fuel return line
Denso IKH24 spark plugs (1 heat range colder)
BlaqOps Progressive double pumper system
GM 3 port boost solenoid using ECU-controlled boost
Stock ECU (Tephra V7 ROM)
Stock MAF
Stock Intake Manifold
Stock Upper IC pipes
E85

32psi peak, 28psi up top

502 whp / 481 wtq

Both 3rd gear pulls:

What would be a similar Forced Performance turbo? Would this be a direct competitor to the FP Red?

That is a sexy curve. I have two questions:
1. How loud is the double pumper
2. Does the car start right up with inj that big (stock ecu)

1. The secondary pump progressively comes on at a start PSI and is at full song at a secondary PSI. You set both of them. Much like a good meth injection controller. At idle/cruise/light throttle it's just a single walbro

2. The car has no starting problems. The 1550's tuned much like the 1450/1250's. I don't have info for pump gas on the 1550's yet as this car sees only E85.

Bryan, Have you guys tried turning the boost up to 38+psi or is that over spinning the turbo by what Chad says? I'm interested to see what the specs of the compressor wheel and turbine wheel are in comparison to the Red and Black. I'm not sure that Chad would want any of that to be released yet or not. Great power band by the way. So you think that v7 with the larger maps really helped out? Would you happen to have the boost plots for v5 vs. v7? Sorry for all the questions Bryan...

*Edit - On a side note... The M2s are prob not helping the power band. With the built motor has your customer been interested in the FP5Rs or S3s since he doesn't have to worry about valve clearance? Even the S2s would help out a lot. Aaron did some testing between the S2s and M3 and he gained like 30hp I believe.

Great work Bryan

Mikey

This turbo is still smaller than a RED

and this is not the final billet compressor wheel that will be in the production version... so we should see some improvements in spool!

the turbine is the same as our BBK Full,

well done brian, im sure you guys are happy...... as are we...

cb

PS,

we dont really design our turbos for excess of these boost pressures... as not many of our clients run over 30psi for road racing.

This is very interesting to read as I'm in the process of having a 2.3L engine build. I know that they are some pretty old cams but I currently have the GSC 264/264 set up.

This also is very nice to know. How is the turbo going to compare price-wise to similar-sized turbos on the market?

Ya I believe that Greg at GSC has made revisions to the S2s, like 3 in the past 2 years. Yours are a bit old... I would look into the S2R (new cams greg is coming out with) or the FP5Rs. The FP5Rs are sick in a 2.3L. Look at Roberts car the owner of FP.
