Mellon Tuning stock EVO 8 turbo vs BBK Full vs FP HTA Green 93 octane
Owner: Eric
Username: EVOEMS
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
Eric is a long time customer that's made the trip to me in Horn Lake, MS (just south of Memphis, TN) many times so I know his car pretty well and figured I would share some data with the community to better help people make a more informed decision on parts.
Model 2005 EVO8 6-speed
Mods:
Stock EVO 8 turbo 10.5 Turbine
23psi
Walbro FP
tbe
fmic
DLL 293/293 was an ugly 274/263 before the tune
Changes:
GSC S1 cams
DLL 363/335
Changes:
BBK Full turbo
29psi
test pipe
02 housing
ported manifold
SBR 3.5" FMIC
PTE 1000cc injectors
DLL 383/351
Changes:
Forced Performance HTA Green
30psi
Ported/Polished/Head 1mm Oversize valve
DLL 400/373
We did a baseline after fixing the AFR and the power was way down 357/336 @ 28psi so I had quite a bit of work to do on the timing map in particular and we raised the boost up 2psi to 30.
stock turbo and old setup vs HTA Green and current setup...seems the green didn't add much lag, still a great car for autox/road course/drag racing etc...and with the new head work I was able to add quite a bit more timing at the lower boost levels for much better part throttle response.

How in the world did he get 363 whp after just adding S1 cams? That's exactly what I have but I only got 330. I'm so depressed now.

Sweet. Thanks for some final numbers. Anyway to overlay the BBK and HTA graphs?

So it seems the full BBK and HTA Green are about the same for power. Hard to say for sure cause of the head.

I think that's a fair statement at least for this car...the gains could be from a combination of the head work and HTA Green. It was hotter outside when we tuned the BBK too. I was hoping for more from the new HTA Green, it seems it's going to take better fuel and more boost to get it anywhere near what the Red can do. My lowest HP FP Red customer has 415 and highest 450 on 93 octane and none of them had head work. One of them made 400 on 91 octane. But I think the HTA Green will spool quicker, probably better suited for Autox.

And extra 1psi.
I would love to see a one turbo put on after the other for a completely identical test, but without someone willing to fork over the money, I doubt we will see anything like that.

just to clarify, when we tuned the BBK Full 29psi is all we could do without making it unstable and causing knock. The head and HTA Green went on and the boost dropped to 28psi, We turned it up to 30psi and it's rock solid in back to back pulls and banging the gears.

can you post boost curves?
Great numbers, i would have expected a bit more torque up top.

chris have you ever had what we call valve float?
we mean as in not due to high rpm or aggressive cam profile but
because of tired/weak valve springs being overcome by boost.
a few ppl have had this here and either upgraded them or fitted doubles etc and
power was improved.
the symptons are not making any more power over a certain boost and lower than expected outputs for the spec when all mechanically/electrically seems sound.
mostly at 2bar+ boost

Well looks like I may be investing in a red now instead of the HTA green...

I'd love to tune it on e85 but the stock shorty wouldn't appreciate it i suspect. The cams are smallish but maybe it would make upper 400's at full tilt
