Do you think I need an amp and that the HU isn't providing enough power?
I have those same speakers and I think they do fine. I know and amp would make them sound tons better but it does its job good imo
I have the Pioneer DEH-5100UB, which also does 22W RMS per channel.

^^ Hmm... mine sounds pretty crappy with the Pioneer HU. Can you hear the sound clearly when you turn up the volume?

Different ears are going to be satisfied at different levels, but in my experience, I've never seen a head unit power aftermarket speakers appropriately. Soon as you stick an amp on those, they are going to "crack" as my cousin puts it.

the bass on them does distort if you turn it up and sounds like ass, but for highs and mids they do really well i'd say. Then I have my subs for the bass. I turn on the HPF so that I dont have to hear the speakers bass, and it sounds pretty good imo. Though I am no audio expert by any means lol

Ideally, you want your fronts to have that HPF on, so they can produce their mids and highs of sound ranges clearly and distort free. You never want to have them produce everything. Then your rears would produce mids, and your subs all bass. No 1 speaker is built to produce the whole sound range without distorting.
