Angry Radio wont open

K, so ive had this headunit for about 2 years. i bought it back when i think the whole control your ipod from your radio business was new. it has a motorized face plate that slides down so you can see what songs/radio stations you are choosing. it also slides down so you can eject a cd but in this case only comes out half as far. in the past week this has stopped working. if you go to press either button, that would move the face plate, it will come half way down, close up, turn off for a second, then turn back on to what it was doing before you had told it to open.

on the radio it says if the faceplate begins to not function properly clean the copper (or w/e) contacts on the back of it. so i did this and it still has been acting the same. i googled for a while, trying to find people with similar experiences. i came across about two instances, both of them people suggested that a gear that is supposed to motorize the faceplate is stripped. to check this i had my brother plug the connection port to the motor up to his "arduino". we tested it and the motor worked fine, it brought the face plate down and stayed there as it is supposed to. as we were doing this we also looked for anything abnormal about the gears but they all seemed to be fine.

after this i tried messing around with the wiring harness, thinking maybe something is loose. still no luck.

any idea of other things i can try? is some component in the headunit maybe just blown out and im gonna have to just buy a new one?
