Security Question

I was wondering out of curiosity since my evo(06 MR) has security how is it that a turbo timer works on these cars? Because since the key is taken out wouldn't that immobilize the engine. I just picked up my car and was curious about this since its the first time i had a car with security. Anyone know how this works?

You will have to wait till the turbo timer times out before you can lock the car.

Are you talking about an aftermarket alarm or factory security?

My alarm will lock the doors, but it won't arm while the timer is running.

If it is aftermarket, you could wire a relay from the timer to deenergize the ignition wire from your alarm so it will actually arm while the timer is running, so the alarm won't see the car running.

Im talking about the facrtory security. The car will not run without the key so hows it possible that with a turbo timer the car stays running when you pull out the key?

I'm guessing the immobilizer only works during startup. Other than that I don't know what to tell you.

This is my understanding of how a turbo timer works. It works very much so like a relay. It taps into your ignition harness and in your ignition harness there's a few wires there. The main wires the turbo timer uses are the accessory, 12v, and ignition wire. When the power is cut off to the accessory wire (when you turn the car off), the relay connects the 12v wire to the ignition wire (to keep the car running) for as long as the turbo timer is set.

As for added security, Most turbo timers have a parking brake wire and speed sensor wire that should be hooked up so in any case which your car is left running and/or unattended, should the parking brake be disengaged or the car starts rolling, the turbo timer will shut off and the car will shut off along with it.

I know how a turbo timer works, im using that as the idea that biggie5252 said The security system of an evo only works on the first start up or im guessing that once its running the immobilizer doesnt need the key any more. I just wanted to understand the security/anti theft system on these cars because i was curious that the car needs the key to start and run but it still runs after you take it out with a turbo timer, so it only needs it for start up is what im thinking. Like when you put a remote start on a car with security you need an extra key hidden in a module somewhere in the vehicle in order to start it. So i was wondering if the same to do a turbo timer but i think was the key and the immobilzer ecu(security) have communicated and the car starts and runs then it doesnt matter anymore.

You definitely don't need anything special to hook up a turbo timer.

Well... you only need a chipped key to start the car... once it's running and the turbo timer activates it will keep the appropriate accessory/ignition wires active for the determined or preprogrammed time and then shut down.

You should not need anything special other than the turbo timer itself.

One thing to keep in mind is if you are planning on getting an aftermarket alarm or starter or combination alarm/starter... some units have built in turbo timers that will do what you want without having to buy an external turbo timer.
