If you just want this for the trip, save your money. Where in Virginia are you going? Just take I70 east (assuming you're close) to St. Louis, get on I64east and that will take you all the way to Norfolk/Virginia Beach. You never have to get off 64, except for gas and to sleep if you choose to do so. You do get on 295s for about 20 minutes to bypass Richmond, but you could stay on 64 and go through Richmond if you wanted. I make this trip several times a year. It's probably one of the easiest halfway across the country trips I've ever made.

As far as a navigation goes, check ebay. I think Pioneer has one that retails a little over a grand so you should be able to get it a bit cheaper on ebay.
