Amp on Sub Enclosure Problem?
Hey all,
I was wondering if anybody else had a problem similar to mine..
I have a JL Audio 500/1 Amp and a JL Audio 10W6v2 subwoofer.
The amp is mounted to the back of the box. (because there was no room to put the amp anywhere else, as my high's amp is mounted on the back of the seat). Now it sounds fine, but what it's been doing is basically that the amp keeps cutting out. I'll be listening to my music and all of a sudden the bass will cut out, and every now and then it'll come in for a second and then cut out again.
The gains are also set pretty low.
The reason I think the amp on box is the problem, is because my friend had the same exact setup as me, and his kept cutting out as well. He figured it was from the bass vibrating the amp. He moved the amp off the box onto the floor and he never had that problem again.
In my case, i'm thinking it could be the same thing, but it doesn't seem like it completely, because the amp doesn't cut out when the bass drops or anything, even if there's very minimal bass it'll cut out.
Its very frustrating

Do you have any pics of the install you could post?
I had the 500/1 pushing a 12W6 and never experienced any problems. But, my amp was not installed on the sub box.
I don't think the way you have it mounted would matter since the screw-down connections on the JL amp make a pretty damn secure connection.
Maybe just try removing the amp from the box and see what happens? If it continues to do it we can try to troubleshoot it for you.

Check all of your wiring, that is a bad place for the amp but it is solid state, and shouldnt disrupt from some shaking like that, should be more of a long term effect.

Never had this problem from mounting on the box. Check wiring.
Is the amp new?

check wiring, make sure the sub is connected at the right ohm load also, it kinda sounds like its overheating and shutting off to prevent damage.

another thing crossed my mind, if it where the vibrations of the enclosure then it wouldn't do that. i would say check the wiring to the amp.

JL / amps don't "cut out", they lower the volume when they overheat until they're cool. They also put out approximately the same power regardless of ohm load (within a certain range that is unattainable with a single w6v2 woofer) - unless the woofer itself is trash.

Kind of a long shot, but do you have signal sensing on the amp turned on?

^^
I don't remember, i'll have to check the specs.
But 2 things, we took the amp off the box, and the guy found a voltage sensor switch which was supposedly in the wrong position.
Now everything works good, i j/gotta adjust the settings on the amp to sound better, but the sub does not cut out anymore finally lol

Yeah, that sensor switch was what I was talking about. It's used to sense a music signal to turn the amp on if you don't have a remote turn on wire. It senses higher frequencies and if you're feeding it a crossed over sub signal then during parts of the music when there is no bass (or high enough bass) the amp will turn off because it doesn't sense any signal.
I had this problem too. The manual explains it better.

I don't really know what to tell you... But I had kind of the same problem running 2 12" L7's with a kicker amp.
My problem was that the place my GROUND wire was hooked up too wasn't the right area.. I ended up using the bracket for my rear seats which now works well.

There isnt much in a JL amp that would be effected by vibration. I would check to make sure you remote turn on lead wasnt loose and that you were maintaining constant power and ground to the amp.

I hate to repeat what has already been said however I experienced a problem similar to this and it turned out to be a poor ground. Moral of the story; grind down the paint to the metal because even though it may still work, its not the best connection and could cause problems down the road.
