Best overall sound by the pound

Hi All,

I am trying to figure out the best way to get great overall sound (rich mids and bass, accurate highs) but without adding a ton of weight to the car. I dont want an enclosure for a subwoofer and I dont want to do any special modifications to any thing, with maybe the exception of getting rid of the trunck torsion bars to make space for a larger speaker.

What I am hoping to acheive is a the bass clarity of a 10in enclosed subwoofer, but without the enclosure and weight of a 10in sub. Has anyone put in 8in subs in an infinite baffel setup on the rear deck? I am also considering the Focal 165K2P speakers for the doors. I am hoping that what I want to achieve isnt impossible.

IMO you cant get what your asking ... "great overall sound (rich mids and bass, accurate highs)" without adding some weight to your car.. it's really all about what a "ton" is to you

to get those Focals to sound right ... you will HAVE to pick up a new amp. (which most the time are the heaviest thing well that and the box for a sub)

and if you asking if you can put 8 inch subs/sub in the rear deck... i wouldnt think that would work very well (for good sounding music) the amount of air space is very important to speakers esp for Subs ... using the whole trunk for your box would not produce a very good sound IMO

If you looking for weight and stuff... why not get a Bazooka amp'd tube? a couple of their newer tubes actually dont sound too bad at all! plus it's easy to take out.

I gave some thought to using a bass tube, but I was really disappointed in there overall sound quality. I realize that a sub working in an infinite baffel setup isnt ideal, but I was kind of hoping that one may have been designed that works well. I am hoping to keep the total weight add <=70 pounds, which I dont think is too unreasonable. The hardest thing to combat is the sub enclosure and cabling, which adds up quickly. I am now looking at doing a fiberglass enclosure (can be fairly light) to attach to the rear deck with one sub installed. This may work out but I need to play with the fiber glass and resin to get an idea of how much such an object would weigh. Anyway, thanks for the input Rcebowl!

I'm doing some pretty good quality comps up front with 2 elemental designs 7" woofers in place of the factory rears. This will be powered by a 4 channel JL 450/4. Pretty simple setup, but should sound pretty good.

how about doing this, you get a good set of speakers (the K2Ps would be great), a single woofer in a fiberglass box (can help you out with that), and a GOOD 4-channel amp. Run 2 channels of the amp to the front speakers, and bridge the other 2 channels into a Mono sub channel to run the woofer. Don't eliminate the rear speakers, but run an aftermarket set of coaxials off of the head unit's internal power. We do that quite often at our shop in STIs, EVOs, and Supras and it is a cost effective, light upgrade to your sound system. I can hook you up with all of the above (at far below retail prices) and for under your 70lb limit. Like i said before, PM me. I'm attaching a pic of my solution to you for a fiberglass box that when loaded weighs in at about 25lbs

boxes can be removed for racing occasions.. I dont see the issue.

True, the simpilest solution would be to buy some pre-fabbed box and just pull it out whenever I want to hit the track. The problem with that is I am too damn spontaneous and often end up at the track when I didnt even know I was going to go. So now I pull my box out, set it on the ground to run and find its gone when I get back. I am still working out some other solutions that would allow me to add up to 2 subs, have the install completly invisible, and be easily removable if I actually know I am going to a race event. And for teh times I just swing by the track whilst I am out and about, it will be light enough to hardly effect anything. Ill let you guys know what I do.
