need expert advice please

I am going with one Alpine 12inch Type R woofer for my Evo trunk. Which Alpine amp should I get to run the woofers. kinda on a budget so no need to get the top of the line model. I only want to stick with Alpine only.

Should I go for 2 or 4 ohm for the woofer and which model number for the amp?

Thanks

i had 2 type r's d/v 2 ohm with a concept 1200 amp.. it sounded good, they are good speakers for the money, but after 2 years the surrounds seperated.. so i stepped up to treo d/v 2 ohm, 5 times better sub, and come with a 3 year warrenty.. they are a little more expensive, not much but worth every dollar.. again type r's are good, but for the money go treo.. my 2 12's and the concept amp, which is 1/4 ohm staple class d has been going for 4 years.. just my advice hope i helped..

The IDMAX is a serious sub, its massive and you'll need an equally impressive enclosure to match it. I recommend looking into Image Dynamics IDQ line, one of my favorites. It will also help out with your budget since its cheaper then a Type R and requires less power to move it which translates into a cheaper amp.

I got this from a guy i know who used to install high end stereos.

"get the IDMax 12 in dual 4 ohm and wire the voice coils in parallel. That will get you 2 ohms total impedence and that amp will give you 600w.. get the Alpine MRP-M650" of course this isnt the best but its something he says will work good.

Does this make sense?

If you're staying with one sub, I'd go with a 4ohm model if they come in dual voice coil (DVC) if its a single voice coil, I'd go with the 2 ohm version.

Yup he knows what he's talking about but the IDMAX 12 takes 1,000w RMS for optimum performance. You'll still be very pleased with its performance and SQ with that amp. Good luck!

You should have at least 700 watts to an ID Max sub. At that power level you will be able to reach full excursion and any more power will have minimal effect on volume but create a great deal of heat. This is unless you are going for one note SPL, then the extra power will be able to push past the mechanical limits of hte sub. This of course will damage the sub over time.

As far as amps go, unless you have to use Alpine for some sponsorship or other reason, I would look into something purpose built. Alpine, Pioneer, Eclipse, Sony etc. don't build amps for the best possible poerformance. They have price points and cosmetics as the primary concerns and follow that up with a rediculous power claim to sell product. THere are many companies that employ their own team of engineers to design amplifiers only and the performance of the product is the focus. I compare this to buying APC or Buschur parts, one is cheap in a pretty package and the other really works...
