CHRA parts swaps - putting the good parts from an 8 and 9 together

Long backstory...skip to the red line if you'd like.

I have a good Evo 8 turbo, but stumbled across a cheap 9 turbo that had an (apparently) binding shaft/bearing. Seemed like a good way to rebuild to a titanium FP White, so I jumped.

Turbo arrived and the shaft seemed bound solid. I started taking it apart and got the housing off of the CHRA pretty easily. Next, I loosened the v-band and removed it. Holy sheepsh.. Batman, the CHRA and hotside housing weren't even flush - they were about 3-5 degrees off. After a few whacks with my rubber mallet, all became clear. The hotside popped of and there was the wheel, about 5 degree off axis. WTF?

I tried spinning it and it spun, but the cold side wheel didn't. Then it clicked: one small tug and the hot side wheel came free from the CHRA. The shaft had snapped clear off. Interestingly, it appears that the bearings inside the CHRA were untouched, as the assembly now spins like any turbo in working order should. The "binding" was the wheel and hotside housing being embedded into on another, with the snapped ends of the broken shaft coming into contact to cause the "dragging".

That's the back story.

Since the CHRA bearing and shaft seems to be in good shape (minus the broken shaft end), I am wondering if the guts of an Evo 8 CHRA are the same as an Evo 9 CHRA. Basically, I'd like to take my balanced assembly from the Evo 8 and put it on the Evo 9. If I mark the alignment of everything and swap it over, does this equation add up:

Evo 8 hotside housing + Evo8 shaft and wheel assembly + Evo9 CHRA + Evo9 compressor housing = Complete Evo9 turbo

The wheels look pretty much identical, so if the shafts are the same diameter, I think I am good to go. The VIII compressor wheel fits the big housing perfectly, but of course, the VIII CHRA is about an inch too small.

I am looking to the experts so I don't end up screwing up my good Evo8 turbo chasing white rabbits down rabbit holes...

Thanks!

Just in case you ever wanted an internal side by side comparison of an Evo8 and Evo9 CHRA/compressor housing:

quick question, the 8 turbo has a 10.5 hotside? if it does than everything should match, the nine turbo is essentialy a 8 turbo (10.5 hotside) with a bigger compressor housing, but they are both 16g's which means the wheels are identical. i say go for it

Yes, it is the 10.5 hotside Evo8 turbo. Sounds like we have a winner.

yea dude the difference between the 8 and 9 (both are 10.5) is the compressor housing, like i said before evertything should match, just swap the housing, aand you should have a complete 9 turbo
