EcuTek ECU "lock" discussion
I usually don't like cross posting to another forum... especially NABISCO. However, I feel that the info in this thread is fairly good. The thread contains several posts from EcuTek and COBB. The thread is in regards to EcuTek flashed ECUs being "locked" with no way to return them to stock form.

This is why I will never buy this product. I would love to get a base Flash from Vishnu and then tune it local but I cant do that so I will just spend the $500 on dyno time using open ecu.

FWIW I have been doing alot of research on this.. And I Have come to the conclusion that the lock is ONLY to prevent tuners from circumventing their license counter in the ECUTek TUNER GUI...
The software should key their licenses to a vehicle Vin# and Immobilizer ID, which is in turn sent back to a master server.. This way tuners can verify that the license belongs to the car and ECU that it was found on..
The lock method violates the endusers rights to his own property.

I bought an 06 STI, put an ECUTek on it, and then was unable to transfer that $1600 license/investment that I had supposedly purchased to my new 06 Evo that I traded the STI in for.
Now I have to spend another $1600 on ECUTek for the Evo, when if Id just bought an Autronic or something compatible in the first place with both I could've simply transferred it.
It's disappointing and I feel I shouldve been allowed to have the STI cleared/reset to stock then the ECUTEk license transferring onto my Evolution 9, and then I just pay for tuning, Because thats fair, I bought a license, my car didnt buy a license and they can't force me to use any software IP on a PARTICULAR device because they didnt sell me that device (the car), right.....legally speaking. But what ya gonna do?

At this point ecutek have supplied their dealers with software to flash back to OEM..... Is this something they are talking about, or already did?
compatible with EVO 9?

I'm sure it is.. They don't do anything that exotic to the rom itself that would make it incompatible. Basically it removes the tune, the lock, and the license.
