TephraMod Knock CEL Flash discussion

I try to keep up with this forum. However, if this has been discussed before, direct me to the discussion then delete this thread.

I think one of the most valueable items in Tephra's mods is the Knock CEL Flash. Obviously, it'll let you know if you have a knock issue. However, I've found that it's a pretty good indicator of fuel quality. I've found some gas stations that I avoid and others that seem to have excellent knock resistance. Certainly I'm not the only one, right?

I run with the following setting:
Slow Flash 3 counts
Fast Flash 6 counts
Min Load for flash 100
Timer 1000ms (I ran with 2000ms for a long time, but I think 1000ms is better)

I get the slow flash several times per day (30 mile commute). Generally around 3000-3500RPM with just over a load of 100. I only get the fast flash occasionally with WOT accelerations.

I used to set mine to 6 and 10. 6 would happen about once a month, 10 once ever, both when I managed to get transitional knock by changing my mind about what I was doing with the throttle as it was building boost, couldn't replicate it deliberately.

6 coincides with a drop in the octane value and the level you can just hear in a quiet cabin if you're used to listening to knock.

Setting it lower was an exercise in being flashed at for the normal operation of the ECU IMHO.

i usually get it when i move off slow from a dead stop below 3000. i i never really got the fast flash. i only get it if u got WOT in 5th at a very low rpm so i just shift down to 4th which is just much cooler lol. but i like it cuz when we get sh*t gas it lets u know. rolly 1818 u know the kinda gas we get over here.

If you are getting 6+ counts often, especially during WOT pulls, you should really check your tune.

I always set up cars at 5 and 8. JCbanks has the best explanation.

A tuning tip, if you drag race, and/or use the drag strip to tune or log or adjust your tune, set it to a number where you would want to let off at. When you are doing a drag pull you dont want to have to analyze the flashing time. Set it to 10 and if it goes off, let off. Otherwise finish the pull and adjust the tune in the pits.

2 slow and 6 fast for me. If I am WOT and I see 2 I usually lift. At 6 I lift and it pulls boost anyway. 2 may be normal for everyday operation but I don't like it at WOT. I've also never hurt a rod bearing ever in a motor. I've hurt everything else but never a rod bearing.

I have found that the problem is in EGR advance addition, I have tried to zero the EGR advance map and the problems went away in that region. I believe they are too agressive. I have EGR enabled in Periphery bits.

Congrats mr mod.

back on topic..

One of the tips I have is to set the time of flash to 800-1000ms.

With the shorter flash time you can see when/if the knock goes away.
