Instructions for removing a pin from an Evo 9 ECU plug

These instructions should get the job done until Jack_of_Trades makes a video tutorial.

Remove the plug from the ECU.

Release the colored secondary restraint by gently prying the release tang on the side of the plug away from the plug. The colored plastic restraint can then be rotated up and out of the way.

There are two holes for each pin at the end of the plug. The T-shaped hole is to insert a release tool. There is a release tang on the bottom side of the pin that needs to be depressed. A sewing needle held with vise grips makes for a good release tool. First push the pin further into the plug, then slide the needle into the hole and press against the side of the pin in the location of the tang, then attempt to pull the pin out of the plug. If you successfully pressed the tang, the pin with slide out with no effort.

Here is a side view of the pin.

Here is the underside of the pin. The release tang needs to be pressed towards the pin.

That's not correct for the Evo 9 plug.

FYI, the secondary restraint release requires a small flathead and a very very cautious push and (with just a little twist). Be careful when you try to pull it up and rotate it away as the secondary restraint is very fragile.

Also, the pins in the IX ecu have the crimp side ("open side") facing toward the connector's main release from the ECU, whereas on the 8 they are facing the opposite direction (at least as far as I can tell from Jack's video).

also FYI, I found that using the back of the needle to push the pin out worked MUCH better than the front (aka I broke the point off!) The back is wider for pushing the tang down.
