Whining between 3000-3100 rpm

Hello,

here's my issue: when I accelerate gently, in gear (3, 4, 5, apparently all do the same) there's a very short whining noise appearing around 3000 rpm. It goes away immediately, in like 1 second or something. Also, it doesn't happen all the time. It happened in about 75% of the tries I did and it's only happening if I accelerate very slowly.

Any idea about this? TC problems? Is there anything I could do myself to determine if it's indeed the TC or not?

PS: I know it's not drivetrain related, but well... about the time I noticed this, I noticed also a hesitation at idle (rpm drops to like 600, goes back to 900 and so on). This doesn't happen all the time either. TBH I have no idea if this is related to the whining above, but I found it rather strange for these two things to appear rather simultaneously.

i have the same noise at 3k rpm too... i don't know where its from...
do u have ralliart engine mounts ?

hmm is it normal for the car to have a quiet whine from 1k all the way while 1 and 2 gear?

It really depends on the whine. Our cars being awd have a lot of gearing going on down there between the tranny the transfer case and the diffs. The car in general is not quiet. Its hard to diagnosis a whine by not even hearing it...it could be normal or you could have a little issue. I know this doesnt answer your question but I just wanted to put it out there. Can you remember if it always made that noise?

I really believe this is normal because i had the same concern. I never heard the noise until i really started getting used to driving the evo cuz i just got it back in january.

Its very possible its normal. Both my evo's had it. If its on decel normally then it may be another issue. But a bad input shaft bearing will make the same noise as you describe. If it doesn't get louder, and the fluid clean, don't worry about it. Make sure you use factory fluids.

Same exact sound in the same RPM range. It started like that then it started getting louder. Finally took it to the dealership. The dealership will not warranty it. Because of my after market clutch. If you take it in let me know how it turns out.

I don't have the Idle problem tho. I think that is a separate problem.

At least for me the sound disappeared after cleaning the throttle body (it's a common problem to have dirt mess with it for all Lancers). It's been gone since 4 days now... not getting my hopes high yet, but well... it's worth a check.

funny i think i have the same issue for past couple weeks. I did my drivetrain fluid changes and oddly enough after that is when I noticed this weird faint whining sound that im pretty sure i never heard before. It can't be my tcase already because I baby my car and never launch it etc. Was wondering if its my fuel pump making that noise??

what are your mods and do you have a tune? this could be the why the rpm is dropping. the whining is pretty normal i think unless it gets really bad its called death whine

i'm pretty sure i have the same issue, but it only does it in 2nd, 3rd, and maybe 4th gears, in those rpm ranges at a slow acceleration. it definately doesn't sound like the death whine from the link above. the whine goes away after about 5-10 minutes, when the car is warmed up? after a drive, i could shut the car off and then turn it back on and no whine. its only after a few hours of "rest" that the whine comes back. i did install ams fmic with licp and new air filter (amsoil) about a couple months ago. any help would be greatly appreciated

I think it's normal. Mine only whines in low rpm when shifting to 4th gear. This has been the same since I bought my car new. I think if you don't hear noises in an AWD then you got problems.

After you change out your drivetrain fluids(especially the T-case), it's wise to re check the fluid level after a short drive to allow the fluids to coat everything.

i forgot to mention that i have a shep stage 1 t-case that was put in a little over a year ago, no launching or racing...just daily driving...i'm going to have the fluids changed this tues., its that time...so maybe it'll go away afterwards?
