Unhappy HELP! Rattle and Whine noise

Hey guys,

I just put in a new clutch, stage 3 exeddy
i drove it home , 2 hour drive back 2 college
i arrive at college and get a call from my mom, she just got back from california and needs keys to house because she lost hers (we live in NY)
so here we go 2 hour drive back
getthere give her keys
2 hours back.
Thing is, on the last trip back, all of a sudden i was going about 50-60mph, i starting hearing a whining noise on the highway
its coming from the front of the car, not sure if its the wheels or not, but it gets loud as i speed up. I know about the 500 mile break in period for the clutch, so no launchs or nething have been done in the evo. As i got closer, when at lower speeds around 30-40 with the gas pedal not pushed in, it makes a rattling noise. HELP?! I just spent so much on the clutch and the install, am I going to be spending even more? Im just a really broke college kid trying to keep his car , maybe its just something loose? im going to check it tomorrow but is there anything i should look for when im checking out the car? is there a way i can tell whether its the transfer case or maybe a wheel?

btw, the car drives fine , shifts perfectly and drives straight and everything, just makes horrible rattling and whineing

im getting the same thing. ive had my clutch in for awhile now, but just last week my car started making a whinning noise whenever i go past 35-40pmh. the fast i go the louder it is. i dont get the rattling though whenever i get down to 35mph and let off the gas. the noise goes away after i slow down past 30mph. im thinking its either a wheel bearing or transfer case. freakin sucks.

Drives: like I've got a pair.

That's definitely your Transfer Case. It's very common for it to "respond" adversely to new clutches --- especially ones that engage harshly. And by "respond", I mean "break".

Sorry man. Park it, and start by calling Jon Shephard @ shepracing.com, and find out how much $$$ you're in for.

When I replaced my old evo 8 TC, I paid just under 1800 bucks from mitsuparts.net

Just FYI.

Believe it or not... make sure your tranny fluid is not over filled. That's a free place to start. Far too often people fill the tranny with the front up on jack stands. SOME Evos trannys get a little noisy from the increase drag of the extra fluid. Others don't seem to mind.

Mine chatters like hell on decel if over filled... it also whines more at HWY speeds. It's also rebuilt and has an RS front dif.

I'd bet they put the wrong fluid in your t-case, and just wiped out your ring/pinion. The T-case is very sensitive to the right oil.

/\ True... however with my theory, all he has to do is park the car on a level surface... reach under the car and remove the FILL plug. If fluid runs out, no worries because the car is supposed to be level when filled in the first place. Then if in fact it was over filled, he knows to replace the plug, and go for a test ride. Otherwise, explore more dire options.

To the OP - exact same issue here. Just got my new clutch in - exedy twin. Just finished the 750kms break in period and now, out of nowhere, I started to have a very noticeable whine when in gear. The whining increases in pitch/intensity on acceleration and increases with speed as well.

When I let off the throttle the whine subsides somewhat, and if I put it in neutral and coast, no noise whatever the speed.

Figured it was something to do with the clutch or something - kindof whines like a racecar. But like you probably did, I just searched "whining noise" on evom and am now starting to freak a bit with all these death whine posts! Really hoping it's not the transfer case...because I can't afford a new one right now, just spend alot on the clutch! :P

Car's going into the shop first thing tomorrow to have the tranny, diff and transfer case fluids changed, that's for sure!

Anyone have anything else to add?

Has anyone ever fixed the "Rattle" when you let go off the gas at higher gears and 40-60mph?
I mean by changing out the TOB, flywheel back to stock, or whole new clutch?

I already have a stage 2 rebuilt tcase with mitsu lsd.....my triple plate is nearing the end of its life along with the trans getting notchy and im noticing a loud grinding noise every time I let off of the gas and coast underload......the tcase has always whined so that is not a factor with mine....im going to change tcase and trans fluid and see what comes out
