Paul Nelson,English Racing and ETS 2009 drag plans

So this year due the economy and funds being tight ETS and I are going to take over Pauls car for the year. I will be driving in hopes to figure out our small bugs so the car can go down the track straight and be reliable. Since I have never driven a car at this level I hope it will give me much better feed back to know how to help others that want to do the same.

Step 1- Is to make our tin can a real tin can. Pauls car was never built right for what it ended up doing. It was a street car that got turned into a drag car very quickly. We have cut the whole cage out of the car and are going to redo it in 1 5/8 chromoly. Should save close to 50lbs over his 1 3/4 mild steel cage. His current cage was also designed around interior and people riding in it so it did not do the best job of stiffening the chassis.

Step 2- Is to make the car have a better power band and focus less on total power but making it get to the ground right. We are going to ditch the Beer keg Water intercooler which should save close to 100lbs. I would reather make 50hp less and have the car lighter. We are also converting the car to Ethanol so the extra cold air will not be near as necessary. We are also doing the Magnus cast intake. I am hoping between the intake and Ethanol we should pick up min of 500rpm spool.

Right now we have the motor and trans out of the car. Putting some fresh synchros in the transmission and new rings in the motor. I am quite surprised how good the pistons looked for the amount of misfire problems we had last year. 1st major cutting out miss fire was caused from our Oddysey battery shorting out randomly at high RPM and the alt belt the wong off and went un noticed for a few passes. All this was extreme break up at close to 50psi.

I also have a 13.5:1 motor in the works. I plan to run our current motor and hope to get at least 10 8sec passes. once I do that I will drop the new one in and convert the car to straight Methanol. I will then try and set a rec on the stock turbo. Hope to have a cheaper learning curve on Methanol with the stock turbo. I will then put the 42r back on and see what i can do.

At the rate things are going it will be around April when the car is ready for the track.

Quick recap
-Lose close to 200lbs with me driving. (So around 2500lbs with me in it)
-tune right around 1000whp with a better power band
-Stiffer chassis and more suspension tuning

Not to be rude but a much better plan! Think you guys are on the right track. Almost went with a 13:1 compression or 14:1 compression motor myself on methanol. But since i got a new bullet in it now i figure i would run it for the season and see how it does first.

Sounds like things are on track though. Cant wait to see how it turns out.

Nice plan guys. I wish you the best with it. Some times power doesn’t = fun or fast.

Alex

Btw 13.5-1 careful you will shoot your eye out.

I am extremely anxious to see this setup with a stock turbo much less one of the big boy 42's. With the compression bump and fueling option this should be a 9 second stock turbo car without a doubt. Good luck in 09 and careful driving what's going to be a torque monster.
