My Evo Vi

Well its been 12 months of owner ship now and its defiantly been a love hate relationship.
So I started off thinking cool i'll get a turbo car get it tuned and i'll have a monster street car WRONG!!! its a long winedy costly road.
The first thing i did wrong was I brought the car and didn't get it thoroughly checked turned out I had a faulty OEM waste gate that hand been occasional creeping to 22psi causing the car to pink not good.
The second thing i did wrong was I didn't decide at the start how far I was going to go whether it was to just get it re-mapped and be happy with that or fully rebuild with all new bolt on goodies.
So after skimping on a Full after market ECU I brought a reasonably priced Piggy back system which I hated the power gains were rubbish and I was not content with the results so I did what any power hungry evo owners does I brought a bigger Turbo I tossed and turned about what to throw at it I looked at everything, In the end I went with the garret GT3076r with 44mm waste gate and factory manifold mounting.
Third thing I did wrong, I didn't do my home work on my tuner and within my first tune with the bigger turbo at only 18psi he cooked a piston and melted a valve.
So i was at breaking point I had a massive desition to make do I rebuild with factiry internals and flick it on or do I go stupid with all new bits.
I decided that I had come this far why not waste another 10-20k so heres what I brought.
CP forged piston
Eagle H-Beam Rods
Standard Crack re-ground and heat coated
ACL race bearing
Factory balance shafts removed
Replaced the cooked valves with standard valves had the head fully recond and added
HKS Valve Springs
BC 272 camshafts
Uprated custom Clutch
and the not used properly yet
Garret GT3076r (although as you will read on we have this turbo putting out some impressive power I would recommend getting the GT3540 instead of the 3076r you will achieve the same power output with less boost and depending on the A.R spool up should be relatively similar like 20psi at around 3750.
The best decision I ever made after learning all my lessons the hard way was a
Link G4 full ECU with Temp MAP sensor and an HKS EVC 5 boost controller
Now with all this new wisdom and wasted money and a rebuilt fully forged 4G63 I needed a new tuner
And ended up doing some more research and discovered through one of my friends a company in NZ called WRC Developments, I have one word FANTASTIC they were amazing in every way they tuned my car up with all my new goodies and running 20psi with no cam tunning and a very safe tune they got around 418hp.
So two months have passed now and the run in tune is getting a little boring so after I replace the Clutch that has already been destroyed im going to upgraded my suspension to full cusco's with Project MU racing disks front and rear and have my friends at WRC Developemts re-tune with cam timing and increased boost levels to 24-26 psi which will be optimin boost for the GT3076r
The tuners are fairly confident with the increased boost cam timming and more aggressive tune we should hit the 460hp atw mark which should be cool and real traction breaker
The one thing I will say to anyone who's thinking about doing an evo build is ask people who have done it all before it saves so much time and money.
Well I'll keep you posted on the second tune which should be happening around August all questions welcome.
