E85 Timing Maps

Post your E85 timing maps and list your observations and setup.

From what I've read peak torque needs a little less timing, and then you can add timing and boost from there on up...

I'm getting ready to make the switch on my 2.3L GT30R setup.

You guys suck.

I'm working on my E85 timing now. I'll post when I'm done.

Did I mention you guys suck for zero postage.

You are right about peak tq timing, on most cars I have tuned they don't seem to like any more than 4* degrees. After peak tq you can ramp pretty hard to whatever peak timing you want. I won't post my map, but it's peak timing is up there , lol. E85 loves timing.

Bryan posted some timing maps in another thread very recently. I've got some stock turbo timing maps in my E85 tuning notes thread.

How much timing the car will take without knock depends a bit on AFR and a lot on RPM. Going a bit to the lean side (12:1 gasoline calibrated AFR) will make the engine more knock resistant in the peak torque range. At high rpm, E85 doesn't knock at all, and timing has to be tuned based on power rather than knock. So dyno tuning or well planned street tuning with a datalogger and a good HP/TQ calculator are needed to keep from going beyond MBT.

stock turbo cars or larger turbos, and at what boost?

My car is at 27psi on a GT3076R, 2.3L

Most of what I've learned about E85 has been from your detailed posts mrfred - they have been very good, I just noticed you are a WA guy - sweet. Come over and visit the west side, come to a track day or something! Bryan has been giving me some pointers as well via some PM's.

I'm using DLL power graphing to set timing. I use one specific on ramp for all of the pulls. So far it is working really well. I'm focusing on timing out the top right now as the peak torque is a little dicey with the false knock I get. I have peak torque timing around 0 to 1 degree right now. Out the top I'm at 16 degrees at 7500 RPM. I made 30 whp jump up top from 14 to 16 degrees. I'll be going up to 17 degrees and seeing what happens.

Once I'm done with the high RPM timing I'll then focus on peak torque. I plan on finding MBT, and then dropping 2 degrees as my tune needs to be a road racing approved with some margin for heat soak etc.

My AFR's are between 11.8-12.0 right now.

Here's the post with Bryan's recent info on E85 timing values:

E85 hints and tips…

My guess is that you've seen it already.

Yeah that post is great, that's what I'm basing my values on now. I'm at 16 degrees and will be moving up to 17 and logging, and so forth.

Peak torque is harder for me with the engine noise from the built motor. I have to really raise the knock thresholds high to eliminate it. So I'm running about what the other built motors do: 19, 20, 20 and get a few counts randomly at peak torque. I'll try raising and lowering timing at peak torque and see if it has an effect on the random knock counts.

50-Trim w/ 32psi
Observations: Power everywhere, tons of torque and great topend. Zero knock. I was considering adding more timing up top as the power continued to climb, but I was getting worried about the stock internals holding up. I'm going bigger on the turbo and built motor so I will see how much more timing it can take.

What Load and RPM do you hit peak torque? What load are you at by redline?

I'll have some maps ready when I get the car back together next week. My manifold cracked and was leaking pre-turbo.

I can post my map when i get back home late this night jid2 Its based purely off of MrFred's timing map for the most part. I had to drop some of the timing here and there on my own car to prevent knock especially in the low load area's where the EGR seems to kick in and cause all kinds of fun

Peak torque hits around 4.9-5k RPM; 2-byte load is between 320-330 at peak torque. I reach 29psi around 4.4k. At redline ~7400 rpm my load is around 280's w/ 27psi or 17* of advance. I'm able to run a good bit of timing at peak torque w/o any knock, my pumpgas maps were able to take about 1/2 as much timing as the corny gas maps.

Sorry to hear about the manifold, I used to have a RNR turbokit that I recently sold. All my power figures above are on that kit; now its Shearer/HTA35R time

Working with MrFred Timing maps which have been great so far just had to decrease timing just a little bit where the EGR kicks in and a touch down in the 250 load area around 5500rpm
