Hi Guys,

Searched, and searched and can't seem to find any form of detailed DIY on how I can go about removing my Evo 8 motor...
Has anything been written too date...?

Removed turbo, exhaust manifold, intercooler piping already...
In the process of removing fuel rails + intake manifold...
I can keep going, but not looking forward to the TC & Tranny removal...and this is where I need assistance!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Or please point me in the right direction.

you dont need to remove the tranny, i would suggest getting a load leveler for your cherry picker so you can get the tilt on the motor you need. the TC might fight you a little, but just keep pushing it out of the way.

otherwise once everything is off, just tilt the tranny side WAY down and start lifting it up and out, it took me about 15 mins to drop my motor back in through the top with the tranny attached just takes some finagling

you can leave the t case in but you need to have it disconnected from the trans. I always tie it out of the way so nothing gets damaged. Its also easier if the radiator is out of the car.

I always remove the transmission, its easier for me since Ive done it so many times. Pretty much once you get the trans out you just need to remove:

-Wiring to engine and intake mani. Fold the harness out of the way.
-Deal with the AC pump
-Pull off hood
-Put some tension with hoist and remove last engine mount.
-Pull up engine and go all around looking for anything you might have missed (big vacuum line going to rear of IM )

Theirs little details glossed over, but basically once you get the trans out the rest is pretty easy.

In my honest opinion with how far you are apart now its easier to just drop it out the bottom. That's how I did mine last time took me a little over 3 hours to drop the whole motor trans and transfercase out. Just unbolt the transfercase first and leave it on the cross member. Then drop it out the bottom on to a dolly like I did jack the body of the car up and slide her out from under it.

Thanks for the replies Gents.

I'm thinking perhaps I can remove the cylinder head from the top, and remove the block from the bottom...what you guys think?

Also...
I've been told to lock the steering column...
Any thoughts?
Hints?

What about power steering, and AC...?
Anything I should look out for...?

no, disconnect both from the block but leave the lines attached to the car. they will be a little irritating but its doable. Leave the head on the block and either pull from the top or pull from the bottom.

i took my 03 out with everything attached even the turbo and manifold. i disconnected the tc from the drive shaft and unbolted it from the trans. this lets u angle it down so it comes out with the engine. i also lost my ac condenser once we had the engine up and the turbo bumped it. so i do recomend taking the turbo and manifold off as u already have. i used an engine hoist and two friends to manhandle it out. u push the trans down so the engine comes up first. just always b looking at clearances.

I still think its easier with the turbo mani and intake off. But I also pull it by myself.

Don't be intimidated, it's pretty straight forward just take your time and get second set of hands if you can

Anything you can take off will make life easier but I've pulled a couple engines and have done it both times with tranny, turbo, and intake mani attatched without too many problems.

And its finally out...
Didn't take too long, and wasn't too bad...
12hrs of work in total, but i'd easily save 4hrs if I had to pull the motor out again!
